=================
This isn't enough light for plants. To grow even medium light loving plants
I have 4 40w fluorescent bulbs over my 55g tanks. They're on 12 to 13 hours
a day - 7 days a week. I used to fertilize them several times a month
(Flourish fertilizers) but now do it at least twice a week. My tanks of
fancy GF are heavily planted. The black crud stopped flourishing when I
added more fertilizer, MORE LIGHT and Flourish Excel. This helped slow the
growth of the black stuff to near zero but I did add plecos and ottos to
clean up the mess....... any algae now growing is a nice green and the
algae eaters keep it under control.

Hi, I am still struggling with Diatoms. They usually live in new tanks
as they like silicon. There are people here who are experts and can
give you a much more detailed description. They are becoming less
prevelant as the tank has become more established. I use the magnetic
algae pads and then use a tooth brush on any unsightly ones that are
growing where the pads can't go. How long has your tank been set up?
If it is diatoms then it seem perseverance is the best tool. I just
make sure I give the glass a good clean when I do my water changes.
The only good thing about them is that they made my 'Greek style'
ornaments look more 'aged'. They were very white and gleaming before.
Hope this helps

yes, I think it might. brown are diatoms live on silicone in the water and phosphate
removers are said to remove the silicone too. Ingrid
