Hello, sorry to hear of your dilemma. I have 4 fancy goldfish and very
little experience except that I seem to have had a bunch load of bad
luck.
I purchase a black moor and within 3 or 4 days he was covered in a
white fungus. Fin and Tail rot. Fortunatly I had him quarentined from
the other 3. I was advised by some great experienced people on these
sites to do a number of things. Firstly I added 1 tablespoon per 5
gallons of aquarium salt. You can use non-iodised. I also added
Furanase anti-biotic and did daily water changes. I think the salt and
water changes were the most effective. The last time I had problem I
used quik-cure. It made the water green but was again effective. It
is a treatment for Ick too.
Hopefully lots of really informative people will advise you on this but
if you were checking and I was the only one so far, then go with the
salt and water changes.
Hope you don't think I'm talking a lot of rubbish.

this is good advice. a very little bit of salt, 1 teaspoon, quick cure every other
day for 3 doses, and change water every day. do not put in more salt as too much
salt and quick cure is not a good combination. you can raise the temp a bit as it
speeds the ich cycle.
what happened was the fish just came in from China and they are chilled for shipment
too fast. then they put the fish into tanks and the ich breaks out. ich break outs
are easily brought on by sharp drops in temperature.
good luck.

I agree with all the advice here (especially salt and temperature)
except for the use of Furnace at this time. The Furnase should be used
as a follow up treatment, but not a primary treatment for ich. Also
water quality helps too (ph, carbonate level, Redox potential, ect.).
And I also recommend Medicated Wonder Shells as a treatment (and even
preventative when you are unsure of the quality of new fish).

Really sorry for the loss of your fish. Please keep us informed as to
how the others are doing. Its so disheartening when things seem to go
well for a while and then 'bang' your worrying yourself sick again.
Fingers crossed for you

furanace aka Nitrofurazone

as an antibacterial is not worth toxing the fish out. It is best to FEED the
antibiotic to the fish. PP is good at killing bacteria but when used correctly
(stock solutions) is very gentle on the fish.

I don't think anyone would use an antibiotic for a parasite problem. ;-)
Furinace/Furacin is one of the most effective antibiotics I have ever come
across where bacterial infections are plaguing the fish. I saw it do
miracles in a WW store where it looked truly hopeless. I saw fish revive
that were at deaths door.... I would never have believed it if I hadn't
seen it with my own eyes.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you do not give up on the
hobby. I ran an Aquarium store and maintenance business for 27 years in
LA, CA. and always tried my best to help out my customers in such
situations. Sometimes we made mistakes, sometimes the customer did, but
either way, we valued their business.

Hi Laura,
I'm very sorry that your fish died.
I'm not sure whether you're an experienced fishkkeper but if not, please
look into the aquarium cycle. Basically, an aquarium is pretty poisonous
at first due to the fishes' urine and what not. During the first month
or so a "cycle" takes place in which healthy bacteria develop in your
system and render the wastes harmless. We start with few fish and quite
frequent water changes to make the cycling conditions as harmless as
possible.
Here's a useful link: http://faq.thekrib.com/begin.html.
Thekrib web site, which the link refers to, has lots of good fishkeeping
information.

PLEASE turn off your HTML and SOUND as this is a text only NG. If he said
that then DO NOT go back there for more fish. They don't deserve your
business.
I have 2, 20 cm calico orandas on order with
him but I doubt I will buy them now, if he isn't concerned for me and as

Excellent idea.
It's a 200 mile round trip for me, you'd think "some" allowances would
be made.
How long do they guarantee them for?
I had the water tested and the only thing wrong was a slightly
high ph...well duh, goldfish like that. So now I have an empty 55 gallon
tank that I don't know what I will do with. Thanks everyone for your
advise, I will remember it for future references.

where are you located Laura?
also, read this
http://weloveteaching.com/puregold/care/care1.htm#buying%20a%20new%20goldfish
it is a summary of how to buy goldfish, what to look for, to look out for.
BTW, single tailed fish are hardier no doubt about it. and calico shubunkins, for
example, have metallic scales and can be absolutely outstanding. AND THEY DONT
FADE!!!!
