Here in northern Ontario the snow is still melting, but I'd like to try
a kiddy-pool pond this summer. Would you recommend placing it in the
shade to keep it cool, or in the sun for plant growth? I'd like to put
some of my water lettuce and other plants in it, maybe some hornwort -
might they be ok?

As to fish, which fish would you recommend I put in the kiddy-pond: my
zebra danios, platies or goldfish? The goldfish are pretty big, and I'm
worried they'll become cat or racoon snacks.

Just a suggestion, but as this is now about ponds and cross-posted to
rec.ponds - how about changing the subject? A discussion on Neon Tetras
might put the ponders off....

I started in 1995 with a $10 kiddy pool. Mine was in the sun, dug into the
ground and had some pond plants to shade the water a bit. I also had
hornwart and elodia in this 1st pond. The goldfish thrived!!!! See my

YES!!! Most definitely. A mini water lily would also look good and bloom.

Forget tropical fish and stick with goldfish. Koi get to large for these
small 150g pools.

That can happen unless you net it. Snakes, snapper turtles, bullfrogs,
herons and king fishers also eat pond fish. All but one of my ponds and
pools are netted.

I use a homemade filter using a 250gph pump, a pond-plant basket and window
screen. I do several major water changes over the summer.

Gill I am so glad to hear this. They may have natural immunity and these
will thrive. BTW, I don't recommend anyone put neon's in a pond. ;-)

I'd put it in partial shade to shade to keep algea growth down. Also, if yo
ucheck your local wal-mart, look for Krylon Fusion.. if you dig a shallow
hole for your "pondlet" and paint it black with th eKrylon fusion, it'l look
great (I have one like that already.)

Again, you can get 26 cent goldfish at wlamart, and they'll do quite well.

If you want to make your pond look cool at night, you can get some of the
rope lights ***WITH NO HOLES!!!!!***, leave both ends OUT of the pond, but
loop the rest around the bottom edge of the pool. At night, your whole pool
will have a glow to it! (I prefer the blue rope light, to give the pond a
bluish glow.)

the danios and platies would need to be removed when the water drops
into the 50's...long finned dannios look cool schooling about in the
light at night, as well did the bettas... there is a small fish called a
White Cloud Minnow, that looks a lot like a blood fin tetra, but it was
able to stay out in the pond all winter with the gold fish, though our
Dallas winter only gave us maybe 7-10 days where ice formed on the
pond...bit different than Ontario

White clouds rule! however, they are illegal in some states because of their
cold tolerance. I don't think they need to be illegal in any area that has
Gambusia. Those little mosquito fish would beat the hell out of any batch of
white clouds that tried to go feral.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about the white clouds. There's a dozen 3 year old
ones in the community tank, so that's an option. I wonder whether they
might breed at their age?

Zebra danios are hard to see from above, especially against a black
background. Brightly colored platies are nice, as are mollies. Another
fish that stays small and does well in ponds are rosy red minnows. I
also keep gold white clouds in my whiskey barrels. I've lost larger
goldfish and 4" koi to raccoons so I can't recommend them without
fencing, netting, or some way to keep the 'coons out.
