White stuff: The substrate in the pots _here_ is rock-wool
If it were rock-wool too I would remove it completely and
would rinse the plants and the roots before putting them
into the tank.

Height and width are influenced by substrate hight and its
"outfit" depends on daily lightening duration, illuminance
and temperature.
