View Full Version : put female bettas in tank

Ok, I just put them in their tank about 1/2 hour ago, right off the bat they
started to fight, kind of paired off, there were a few that managed to stay
clear of the fighting, mostly two white ones fighting, two red ones
fighting, and the one I was worried about most because she is smaller I
think younger, is fine no one seems to be bothering her much at all she is
just swimming along like she don't notice them.
Now my question is I have done a lot of reading and know they have to decide
who is boss and what order they go in, but how long is to long to be
fighting, I read a week, but I would think a week of fighting is to much,
for someone to not get really hurt, I put some real plants in the tank and
filled it in with fake ones so there were some extra places for each of
them, any suggestions on making this any easier. and if they fight to much
should I separate them and how much is to much

I don't think they really stop harrassing each other - that's why that
have the pecking order thing. Mine never did - I just got sick of
having an adrenalin rush everytime I looked at them nipping at each
other, it was shortening my life, so I decided to take them back and
switch for an oscar... it was a wise choice I feel...

Well i fed them last night and turned the lights off to give them time to
adjust, just turned it back on now to feed them, they all seemed to be fine,
no war wounds, a little nipping when one got in anothers way while they were
eating but other then that they look good. So far i am glad i set this tank
up, i will try and take pics they look so pretty swimming with each other
all the colors, its also neat to see how they act with one another. I think
i am going to keep the light off today just to give them a little more time.

Glad to hear they are getting along better! Female bettas fighting each
other is new to me - I had grown up with the apparently false knowledge that
they coexist perfectly well, but like I said it must have been
misinformation back then that I had assimilated. Good luck and later!

I have 10 female's all together...9 new ones, I had 1 all ready, I took her
out of the tank and completely remodeled the tank so she would not be
getting snippy thinking they were coming in to her house,
Put *lots* of plants in the tank for cover, some rocks, which they seem to
enjoy. They are in a 40 Gl long, I seen some females while out today and
wanted to get them, but I realized that the day I put them in there that
would be it, otherwise fighting would brake out again.
They fought the first day, I kept the light out for two days and only turned
it on to feed them for 15 minutes at a time, after that they all started to
get a long good, I love sitting and watching them, I took time to put this
tank together, I usually end up putting one together when I find something
at the lfs and I have to hurry up, but I wanted this to work so over two
weeks I did it, ordered the fish and had to wait so I was happy to finally
get this together, now its neat to watch them interact with each other.
Its a pretty tank to have

Nikki,
I'm glad your girls worked things out. But all bettas can be aggressive. It just depends on how you set them up together. It sounds like you did a good job providing them with hiding spots, and putting them in at the same time. That way, no one feels like they've been invaded.

From every thing i read (which was a little to much) i was looking forward
to at least a week of fighting and was suprised with in a day or two they
were all getting a long fine, I really do love that tank, i dont know why i
guess just the way they interact with one another, neat to watch.
