View Full Version : New 'Neon" Clown Food

I added some small neons to my existing school over the weekend, and
sat back to watch my 2 clown loaches (2.5" - 3") start devouring them,
smallest fish first.
What was most amazing was that the 2 loaches appeared to operate in
tandem to catch the neons, hunting in a pack (a pack of 2?) so to
speak.
I had no idea that clowns could be so predatory.

Except they've never been known to spawn in captivity, so there goes
that theory.

So all clowns are caught in the wild?

Not necessarily true anymore - they are farmed now according to my LFS -
he says this is the source of his CL stock. If I take a look at their
Clowns they are all a uniform size which leads me to believe that this
is now the case....

Nope. Clowns were bred 10 years ago, and the report published in PFK.
They were conditioned on fish.

Put the word aquaria in the subject to reply.
Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com

It's all very interesting, but you can't possibly be suggesting that
one or two rare, isolated cases, could possibly supply the entire
aquarium industry worldwide, can you?

Ah yes trying to use rational to deal with Ross?
Not gonna work!
He's only here to do his best to make me look bad. My shadow if ya will.
sigh
Be prepared for some LONG and anal convo's with the troll.
Having caught (and eaten) clowns in Borneo I can assure ya that most are
still being wild caught.
However even this ancient baensch aquarium atlas has stuff on tank spawns.
:-) best news is that with 'Ovaprim' injections it is now a step by step
process rather than a confused attemp to use every trigger you can think of.
Ya need old clowns, lots of room and the ability to vent sex 'em(unless your
good at the tails.... wavy =male).
Then feed them up and fill chicks with eggs with timed injections.
Then ya need the spawn..... but once it starts should be lots of eggs.
Considering how many and how easy they are to catch captive breeding will
never take the place of wildcaught, just like cardinals.
But it is a worthy practise if we are ever going to stabilise some of the
more interesting patterns.
Fish farms in Malaysia/thailand are reported to be pulling off regular
spawns but not sure what rates they are raising/killing
But yea tricky without using hormones, much more step by step using them.
If your going to go to all the trouble, shop around for a vet who works with
aquaculture, for a fee he'll probably do the jabs himself and depending on
where ya are, the hormones are usually unrestricted and quite cheap. They
are what makes the difference though. Having all the females ripe at once
means the place is ready to go if ya can just trigger........
:-)
To get some nice colours happening I reccomend seafood shells (shrimp or
crab) blended up and mixed with gelatin. Lots of pigments there! Throw in
some powdered spirulina and chopped earthworms (raised on vege scraps) and
ya got a complete food. Feeding snails is also much overlooked. If you can
be sure no chem contaminants, then even garden snails work very well.
Luv me clowns I do.
