This morning, got up and saw that the Krib eggs, are now gone... not sure
where, but not where they started...

What is the process that Kribs go thru once eggs are laid??

Substrate spawners all go through a similar sequence. i) Locate a
suitable surface, lay & fertilize the eggs. ii) Fan & inspect the eggs
until hatched (2-3 days depending on temperature). iii) Move wigglers
between hiding spots (again 2-3 days depending on temperature). iv) When
fry become free-swimming, they get corralled around to areas of potential
food.

Sometimes a new set of parents will go right to step iv), but more
typically not. Typical problems, by steps:
i) eggs were not viable or not fertilized
i) spawning interrupted by other fish and eggs destroyed
ii) eggs are eaten by parents
ii) eggs were taken by fungus
ii) eggs were eaten by nocturnal predators (use night light)
iii) wigglers swallowed during moves
iii) discovered and eaten by predators
iii) misplaced and lost
iii) fry die from defects (genetic)
iv) eaten by parents
iv) discovered by predators & eaten
iv) fry starve due to insufficient or improper foods
iv) fry vanish (defects, when switching from yolk-sac to normal
ingestion)

Folks who breed Angelfish and Discus are very familiar with the pitfalls.
These fish spawn on leaves, slate etc, and move their fry around to stick
them to other similar objects, but otherwise follow the same routine as
the substrate spawners. I've never heard of Angelfish going to step iv)
in the first try. More typically, each spawn gets one step further, but
some never get it at all. Unlike Angels, Discus parents are a
nutritional step for the fry at step iv), so they cannot practically get
separated from the fry if they are found to be eating them. Returning to
Kribs (I have a tendency to ramble ;~), they typically go right to step
iv) about 1/3 of the time (in my limited experience), and the 2/3 of the
failures are often not even noticed by the hobbyist. Of the detected
spawns, the odds are better than 50% that they will go right to
free-swimming step iv), so there is a good chance that the fry are just
hidden away from prying eyes. Watch for the locations of the parents.
The male will be the ruse, going to where the fry are not. Watch the
area around the female. Krib fry are very identifiable by little black
lines or blotches on them. Don't spook the parents (general rule, but
Kribs don't spook easily).

Not sure about kribs, but my rams move them around the tank. Sometimes on
the flowerpot, sometimes inside and other times in the pit they've dug. I
suppose it depends on what is going on outside and how threatened they feel.

Red, what else is in the tank with the Kribs?.. My Kribs normally lay eggs
in a terra cotta flower pot. The female disappears and you seldom see her
until the eggs hatch out. One day out of the pot she comes along with about
a hundred fry.

NetMax, I can't thank you enough for taking the time to explain that... it's
exactly what I needed...

These were in the 55g with corys, 2 4" clowns and a 14" pl*co... I suspect
they've moved them because the pl*co had made a habit of laying across their
flower pot, and the kribs picked at him several times until he left... the
clowns were pushed away and the corys learned very early to stay away....

My guess is they're somewhere that they don't want me to watch them... I've
been watching for 15-25m daily since I"ve seen them... I'm just fascinated
with them....

Also, in a 10g, I've got a pair that laid under a flower pot, but on the
outside.... she's guarding, and he's at bay.... I can't see them eggs, thus
I don't get to watch as much...

I'll see what happens shortly...

again, thanks, VERY much...
