Well i moved the tanks last night, using 5 gl buckets, when i finished
setting up 29 gl i went to put fish back in and noticed one of the kissing
gouramis was gone, i went back to where i had the bucket, he was not there,
my husband said eddie was in their, (our big dog) after looking a little
more found him, he was a good 2 ft from the bucket, covered in hair i put
him back in the bucket when i put the others in the tank, i thought he was
dead, after my husband took hair off him he started swimming, but did not
look great, i threw some exta salt in the bucket and some melafix in with
him, removed half the water so bucket was only half full (so he could not
jump) i went to check on him after i finished the other thank and again
GONE, he did not make it so far that time, i dont know how long he was out
either but i put him in the tank that time, this morning he is doing fine,
does not seem to have any wounds to speak of, so i guess he is fine.
koi-lo, I took the UGF out of the guppy tank, these females must of know i
needed to do something with the tank so they hurried up and had some babies,
i found about eight, i guess they could of been from the last batch and i
just have not seen them, but a couple were under the UGF, any way upon
lifting it, i could not put it back in, at least not in the guppy tank, it
was kind of yucky. those fry were happy to get out, i noticed one comming up
the tube from the UG, i was like what the heck was that, my husband said
looks like a baby, figures.
So no one seems worse for the wear this morning.

I learned long ago to cover any bucket or tote I put fish in. Another
alternative to give them a feeling of security and discourage jumping is to
float something on the water's surface they can hide under. Watch him
closely though. I've had them look fine and a few days later show patches
of bacterial or fungal infection (small fuzzy patches).

This doesn't surprise me.

It was probably sucked right through the gravel. They would have died under
there. I have all my UGF in the outbuilding. It's the best place for them.
One of these days I'll carry them off to the burn-bin.

Now that's good news. :-)

Ok, one thing i just noticed....the top fins of a kissing gourami, they kind
of look like they have a mo hawk, it all stands straight up, the jumpers is
not standing up no more but laying flat, it also looks brushburned is the
best way to explain it, i thought about Neosporin but i think with all the
stress doing anything might hurt him more then just watching it, i also
just noticed if he is swimming at the bottom he is fine, if he gets by the
filter its hard for him, i guess its to be expected but i dont know if he is
in as good of shape as i thought but i guess i will wait and see, i put some
melafix in the water for the wound.

Wait and watch may be the best thing for right now.

Nikki - I hope you follow the directions on the Melafix Label and
continue with the recommended full course of treatment. The stuff
isn't intended to just toss in a little one or two days, it's a full 7
day treatment plan. You may have some fin damage from what you
describe, and this is a condition where Melafix has seemed to be
helpful. If it doesn't work after the full 7 day treatment, then you
can say it doesn't work, but not until after the full week. And I hope
it works. I think it's been determined here that it is compatible with
any other treatments you may try. JMOIMHOFWIWYMMVCMA

Yes I know how long it says to treat....I'm pretty good at reading, many
years in collage you know.......
I also used it to treat my betta who was dying, however I treated him for
two weeks, instead of 7 days.
I don't think I am going to get the chance however to treat him for 7 days,
I don't think he will make it that long, he went from doing & looking very
good last night and this morning to very bad this afternoon, and being I
think it's just from lack of oxygen when he was out of the tank and the fact
he is a little banged up, and stress on top of that, there is not much I can
do for him at this point.
But if he dies...I would not need to continue the treatment. while I do
think melafix works due to its healing properties, it is not an antibiotics,
the reason I believe its best to use it for 7-10 days is so that it has time
to work in the way the label claims, but stopping it early I don't believe
would have any adverse reaction other then not helping any more, unlike an
antibiotics which when stopped early will allow the bug / infection to
become resistant, and restart the infection sometimes worse then what it was
to begin with, it can also cause the antibiotics to no longer be effective
in that situation. Stopping the melafix early or even if it were to be used
on an inconsistent basis is not going to do no more then not work in the way
it should. Although I cant say melafix is what caused my betta to get
better, because I used antifungal medication (2 courses) then followed with
melafix, I think it speeded up the healing process, which is the only reason
I would use it (for injuries)
I am not planning on using any other meds with the melafix, I don't think
there is anything to treat other then a scrape on his top fin, I have three
other healthy fish in that tank and would rather not expose them to any
thing that would compromise their health, and I don't think taking him out
of the tank at this point is such a great idea either because the stress of
catching him may very well do him in any way. So I am stuck just waiting to
see how he comes through .......if at all..

Oooops. Sorry, didn't mean to sound condescending or insult your
intelligence. It's just that I keep reading things on newsgroups and
in fish magazines, "I threw some Melafix in", and then I read
complaints that Melafix doesn't work and I wonder how much of a chance
it was given to work. I've been most impressed with its effect on
regrowing fin rays and tissue, which it sound like your gourami has
acquired immediately after his space flight, thunk. But combined with
whatever else he got skidding across the floor, and the lack of oxygen
for who knows how long even though he can utilize some atmospheric O2
- - he may have gotten hit with too many hurts at once. Good luck and
keep us posted.

I never see my Kissers eat flakes off the top of the water...do you
find that yours do?

uh, thats funny, i have the two kissing gourami's and one blue gourami, i
find the blue one eats much like the betta, because of the shape of his
mouth, he is unable to get stuff of the bottom of the tank very well, so he
always eats from the top, now the kissing gourami's for the first couple
days i feed flakes and noticed that instead of going up for them they would
wait for them to hit the bottom, so i started giving the kissing gourami's
HBH betta bites or biogold because the HBH sinks quick they like that much
better, they go between the two foods but only eat it once it hits the
bottom or is close. I try to give them different things, i have that
botttle of fish food that has four different kinds in the bottle, breakfast,
lunch, dinner, snack which is algee flakes.
I also notice the kissing gourami's act much like my goldfish and suck stuff
of the rocks.
