I cant for the life of me right now remember the name of the plants I have
in my female betta tank, if I get time ill take a pic, but is there
something I can do to help the plants not die, they don't look great, I am
not going to be home a lot of the next couple days my brother killed him
self on Wednesday, he was my middle son's godfather so I been busy trying to
keep the kids occupied.
pieces of the plants are coming off and I don't want to come home and find
all my fish gone because my filter got clogged from plant leaves, PS... I
did not do nothing to kill these plants, they said they grow easy just plant
them in the tank under gravel ...and I did that. should I be adding
something to the water, and if you need to know what kind of plants I mean I
will try to figure it out later and post it. they were nothing big just 1.99
plants for my bettas to hide in, which i think they may be eating, maybe
that is the problem
nik
PS...If i dont get the chance in the next couple days... i wanted to tell
everyone I hope they have a nice holiday

If you are not certain of what your plants need, and you are concerned
that they may fall apart so much as to clog your filter, and they only
cost a few dollars, I think you should remove them completely. This
will take at least one worry off your mind, and it sounds like you
will have much more important things on your mind in the next few
days. Take care of your family and my God/dess be with you.

I guess I could just put fake plants in for the next few days I have some
laying around, I just did not want to end up with a tank full of dead fish,
either from the filter being clogged, or because I took their hiding places.
Just to much work at the moment
I'm trying to take a mental brake right now, been up all night and kind of
need to be distracted for a little while, other wise it just gets to be to
much to handle.

Yes, please try to relax and take care of your family.

The fake plants you already have sound like a good solution to keep your
fish feeling comfortable, if you remove the "poorly" live plants. Also,
the aquarium would probably be fine for some days or a week if left as
it is.

For future reference, plants have some basic requirements such as enough
light and nutrients. Planted aquariums are a fascinating branch of the
hobby. There's a rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants group, information on web
sites like the Krib, and good books.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Get Flourish Excel and the other fertilizers
they sell. They really do make a difference and use plenty of light for at
least 12 hrs a day.

It's hard to suggest anything not knowing the names of the plants.

Bettas don't bother or eat plants.

Whenever I've put stiff plastic plants in with bettas, they've damaged
their fins on them. The ones with silk leaves work better. Since
you've got so much going on, just remove the dying plants and leave
things alone. Your bettas will be fine - lack of hiding places does not
kill solo fish. FWIW, I grow java fern and anubias in my unlit betta tanks.

I'm very sorry to hear about your brother. That must be hard.

I am so sorry to hear that about your brother - I offer my sincerest
condolences. Suicide and accidental death are tragic mysteries - may
god/dess (this twist borrowed from mister gardener) be with you and your
late brother. Please try to be easy on yourself so you can adjust to the
resulting changes I know it must be hard.

Besides what the others here have said about fertilizer and co2 (flourish
excel liquid co2) and light if you are on a tight budget you could try plant
tabs which are fertilizer in the form of tablets. I have had good results
with my Amazon sword plant when I apply enough light and feed it a plant tab
once a week. The tabs allow target fertilizing which is pretty nice. I can't
get egeria densa (common pet store plant, bought in bunches, mostly a
floating plant, and to my non-understanding everyone I talk with says it
grows like a weed and they don't have much to say about how I can never get
it to grow for me, I have currently chalked it up to not enough light) to
grow and my hornwort only grows in one of my 3 tanks. Go figure. But I have
had SOME success with plants. Good luck and later!

My gender blending of my god comes from my impressions that only a
woman could be so nurturing and forgiving, and only a woman could be
so vindictive. So I try to cover all bases.

Both of these plants are heavy feeders that do better in hard alkaline water
than in soft acid water. Both need good but not excessive light. I
couldn't even keep hornwart alive in NYC were the water was PH 6.8 and soft
(can't recall the exact numbers). The water was from snowmelt in the
Mountains.

Oh, I found a small piece of LIVING hornwart in one of the tanks!!!! :-)))
I'm watching it carefully to see if it makes a comeback.

I wanted to say thank you all for the words.....
Today is the funeral, his three year old daughter was told yesterday.... and
i think that was worse then finding out what he did....of course she was not
told how just that he is in heaven with the angels....not that it matters to
her were he is at ...she wants her dad here and is very mad and i dont blame
her.
you know this is the third time in eight years i lost people in my family
this way, my uncle, my cousin, and now my brother, and one thing i am sure
of, life is never so bad that it cant get better at some point.
I'm trying to take a brake before i got to start this day, its going to be
long
again thank you guys
Nik
Mr. G
god/dess ...my thinking is some where along those lines also, and this is
one of those times where i got to pray god is as forgiving as i have always
believed he/she was.
