View Full Version : Buildt a cave

hi all,

It's been two days since I put in my home made cave. now I'm worried.... all
the snails died, (the small black pest snails I feed my Loaches). The water
parameters are:

GH 4
NO2 0
NO3 0
PH 6,4 (!)
KH 3

What should I do, if anything..?

Did you make the cave out of copper? <j/k> Seriously, what were your
materials for making the cave? Myself, I would remove it until I traced the
problem.

The cave was made out of ceramic tiles, glued together with aquarium safe
silicon.

I might have panicked a bit early though, I did a water change of 25%, and
found lots of the snails are still alive. The fish seems ok too, but
still....

Didn't you say it had cured for 40hrs?? that would be long enough to
cure.... I've done it with several peices and only waited 24-36hrs....

Yes it did! I panicked... Things seems to be ok, lots of snails, and the
fish look ok. I'm just not sure I trust the silicon ... :/

If there is anthing left to leak into the water from the silicon, would
active choal bind the stuff?

I'd pull it out, just in case... Maybe the outside of it, even cured,
allowed some yucky stuff thru, and maybe it wasn't totally cured....

I can't say with certainty that charcoal will pull it out, yet, it couldn't
hurt by any means...

I think that activated carbon or charcoal (choal?) would remove any
lingering toxins, but it sounds like you are ok now. Water changes &
carbon will probably be your best tool.

I put together a DIY structure using lots of silicone
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_other_netmax_styro.htm . It takes a
few days for the silicone to cure, but then it's inert and safe for your
fish. I think you might do more harm by pulling the structure out, or by
being too aggressive with water changes (unless you have very high
quality water. Many across the pond don't.

I think you're right NetMax, I noticed 3 dead snails next to eachother and
panicked. I just fed them, and they're out there fighting over the food as
usual, so I think they're alright.

I also think it would cause more stress to them if I pulled the cave out
now... I'll put som charcoal in the filter, and do 10% water changes daily
for to or three days and see how it goes. We have good water quality where I
live, so I think that should be ok.

Thanks for the link! I'll be better prepared next time - these panick
attacks takes it's toll on a poor woman LOL

Thanks again, I feel better now :)

Why thank you. It's actually Chuck's web site and he hosts my article.
Chuck has some very well written articles (mostly his own), so I was
quite honoured to have my own page on his site (my own web site is in a
constant state of disrepair). I thought sharing some of my experience
might help allay your worries a bit. I also manage about 110 tanks, but
none have Zebras at the moment. I keep trying to locate some L046s, but
all I find are poor imitators LDA018, L081 etc. You are very lucky.

No way, it's a mess. One of my kids started it and.... you know how kids
are about finishing things. I did a little programming in my youth, so
maybe I'll pick up an HTML book, or is it XTML, java, flash (?) *agh*.

ohhhh I though you were Chuck! well, that doesn't make your article any less
interesting! I'm already planning how to prepare the next fish tank using
your method to build a background and the ground structure. I believe I will
have to wait until we move to a house before getting a new tank though,
hubby says 4 tanks are enough in our apartment! Can you believe that :P

And yes, it did make me worry less, my babies are doing fine too :)

The Zebras must be vailable from somewhere though, as
www.mallespesialisten.com got hold of 35 of them in January. He still has
several of them left. (look under "Nettbutikken")

Only four? ;~) Oh well, this _is_ a sport of patience.

Occasionally a supplier gets some in, and then rather than risking
offending any of his customers, he will let everyone know so that we can
all get a few. If I wasn't on well-water, I'd probably be trying to
breed them myself.

cheers, and post or email if you have any questions on the
styro-structures.
