View Full Version : What the heck is a "high fin Chinese Panda"?

Interesting & odd fish at our LFS, labeled as a High-fin Chinese Panda.
Definately NOT a Panda Cory.
Maybe 5" long & rather tall bodied, at least 3" or more counting top fin, more
compact & boxy than a cory, almost gold-fish like, but I don't think it is one
-- more of a flat-bottomed scavenger body type. Dark & light mottling might
be considered vaguely panda-like if you have a vivid imagination.
A web search for "high fin Chinese Panda" nets zero results. I guess I should
have asked, but I'm skeptical that this particular LFS would know -- labeled
"non-aggressive" and "$70" (yikes!)
I realize that's a pretty lame description, but can anyone give me any guesses
as to what it might be? And how delicate, and just how "non-aggressive" in a
tank w/ significantly smaller fish?

panda could be misheard banded/
Not a fish to buy! Look at the size!

These guys are the Ugly Duckling in reverse, very pretty fish when young.
There were some concerns that these were being overfished a few years
ago, and the conscientious stores stopped carrying them. This may have
changed by now. Due to their size, I think that they really aren't
size-appropriate for most aquariums.

A belated thanks, Sue & NetMax, you had this guy pegged exactly. I passed on
him, based on the info you helped me find. -- Jim
