View Full Version : Beard Algae in a 10G Tank
Hey!
I've got beard algae in my 10G tank. I was curious if someone could
reccomend a good fish or product that would take care of the algae?
The tank is about two years old, and fully cycled. The only inhabitants
are a group of 7 neon tetra. The tank gets water changes of 20% every
other week.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Evan Davis

My regular pleco and clown-pleco eats it. The otos don't. If you get a
pleco watch the size. The clown-p only gets around 5" whereas the cheaper
regular pleco gets 18" or more. You can also try brighter light and more
water changes and FERTILIZERS for the real plants in your tank - if any.

Thanks for the reply, are you sure a clown wouldn't get too big?

I looked them up on the net. I will never buy another regular pleco again.
None of the stores will take them back when they outgrow tanks,.. where I
live. The clown plecos wont outgrow my 55g tanks and are only something
like $2 more per fish.

If you have live plants, try Flourish Excel by Seachem. I had a real
bad algae problem in my tank. I made a few changes that got rid of all
of it.
1) Started using Flourish Excel
2) Increased the 10k light. Be sure it's 10k light.
3) Got some SAEs (Siamese Algae Eater). Be very careful getting one of
these. There are 4 species that all look quite similar and are usually
all sold under similar if not the same name. You most definately don't
want a Chinese Algae Eater as they are quite agressive and don't eat
algae. The flying fox and false siamese are also not so good at eating
algae. They get to be about 6 in. so add with care.
If you don't have live plants, the problem is much easier to remedy.
Your LFS should have plenty of products to help.
