Emperor 400 filter

Never had an impeller go bad. What does it sound like or behave like. I
have a grating noise and know it's from the impeller area. Cleaning the
filter has only a small effect that last 1-2 days and then it's back to
grating. Established tank. Could it be baby snails that so small they
pass the intake grating? Would like to know what the problem is, before
I start spending money.

Thanks.

could be snails, I have that problem a lot. Take the filter apart.
look down inside where the impeller sets.\

One way my impellers fail is that the paddle wheel part turns freely
against the magnetic part. there is a little tab that is supposed to
couple them, but it breaks.

another way, the bearing freezes up, the magnetic part won't turn on
the support shaft.

Sometimes the magnetic part looses its magnetism and just doesn't turn
any more.

Clean it thoroughly first.
