Hey all
I started lurking here in the hope to get some information about fish, the
keeping and care of etc.
What a surprise. Are the malicious and vindictive posts normal, or should I
just be quiet and the Trolls will go away?
Having said that, the information I have read has been very informative and
I'll be lurking and hopefully contributing in the future.
Cheers,

Killfile or ignore them. Don't let them ruin your experience here.

Contribute now. :-) But please remember there is at least one other person
here using my NYM. You will quickly learn to tell us apart.

Yep, worked that out pretty quick
:o)
There is a big difference in style and language between you and the other.
Currently we are breeding an army of Blind cave fish, various Tetras, Coral
Blue Gourami, Silver sharks, Red Tail Black Sharks and two varieties of
Sucking Catfish. We've managed to kill numerous of the same, as well as two
Bettas...no they didn't kill each other, I think the Blind Cave fish did a
ram raid on them and butted them to death (j/k). We also had a Black Knife
fish that probably wasn't suited to the conditions we put it in.

In Outlook Express, you can 'kill' entire threads by:
In group view, Select VIEW - CURRENT VIEW - DEFINE VIEWS
Select Where the Message is watched or ignored
Select ignored
Select hide
Then in your group view, pull the view options down and select the new
view you just created (hide ignored is what I called mine)
I think that's it. Then in your display column, click on the glasses to
watch or ignore.
If you select ignore, the next time you open the newsgroup, those messages
will not be displayed.
To just killfile, MESSAGE, BLOCK SENDER etc..

Spam-bots or Addy-combers crawl through Usenet 24/7 harvesting e-mail
addresses to sell to spammers. That's why you should always mung or fake
your real address. IOW if your address is so something
like this: . People will know what to remove
to e-mail you, but the spam-bots don't know the difference. Once you're on
several spammers lists you may as well get a new e-mail address or some type
of e-mail washer software.

We have an 24 inch tank and a 48 inch tank.
The 24 inch tank houses a fantail Shubunkin and a genuine Black Moor (not
the cross bred gold/black blend), and a few Neon Tetras that we will be
moving to the big tank.
The main tank has most of the fish, living in harmony now that 'survival
of the fittest' has run its course. I used to have a tank of the same
size when I was a young lad, so had some idea of what might survive and
what sort of filtering system I'd need. This tank has an under gravel
filter, as well as a CP 1000 canister filter. It's well aerated and has
various weed species (including the obligatory Elodea. Lots of natural
rock features for the catfish and Loaches to hide under.
Here is a list of what's in the main tank (checking my books so I get
this right):
Plants:
A grove of Vallis (giant twisted and straight)
Patches of Elodea
Some Red Ludwigia
We've also collected some fine weed from our dam that looks like a cross
between ambullia and Cobomba
The fish:
1# Red tail Black shark
1# Blue Coral Gourami (the other one died)
2# Gold Sucking Loaches
2# 'zig zag' loaches (common sucker loach) or sucking catfish as they are
sometimes known
3# Silver sharks
3# Cardinal tetras
4# Blind Cave Fish
6# Paraguay tetras
7# Black Neon tetras
7# Congo tetras. Actually, I'm unsure of these as they do not look like
any Congo tetras I've seen in books. They have a silvery body. The caudal
fin is Black with white edges, and the ventral fin is elongated and black
with white edges. The shop folk labelled them as Congos, but I'm not so
sure.
8# Glow light tetras
None of these are adult size yet. The Blind cave fish are about half
adult size at present.
We have lost (due to various reasons), two Black knife ghost fish (that
was an expensive exercise)
Three Clown Loaches
Two Siamese Fighters
One Coral Blue Gourami
Two Albino Corydoras
Two Glass catfish
One Blind Cave fish
and about fifteen or so various Tetras
Thankfully we haven't lost any fish for about two months now. The tank
has settled and become well balanced.
I am hoping to hunt down some local native Rainbow fish from the creek
(our property borders a creek known as Alligator Creek), but we have to
keep an eye out for crocodiles as we live in the tropics. Thankfully the
majority we get this far upstream are freshwater crocs, which are quite
timid when comes to humans. It's the salties we need to watch out for.
Down the back paddock we have a small dam that has a couple of Comets
that will probably breed in the next year or so. We'll have to wait and
see.
We also have some cattle troughs that we keep Platys and Mollys in to
help reduce the mosquito population. Once these have bred up some more,
we'll be transferring them to the other dams to see if we can kill off
some more mozzies. There are a dozen or so dams on the property that are
more swamp than anything, so we really need to get some sort of fish
population going to stop the mosquitoes.
Anyways, I hope this has been somewhat interesting to you all, and thanks
for reading.
Cheers,
G

It wont.

Would it be better to remove the dams so the land can drain to get rid of
the mosquitoes? We have a wet spot or small natural pond on our property
every spring, from runoff. We can't drain it as the sluce-pipe under the
road is too high. Even though it dries up in July the mozzies breed like
crazy in it all spring. :-(

Ermmm, no...we live in Australia :o)
hence the crocodiles. Why it was named Alligator Creek we don't know,
'cause we only get Crocodiles here. We live on an 1800 acre property in
Queensland, about 45km North of of a City called Rockhampton. You can
Google Earth our place by putting these co-ords in:
lat=-23.0921527778, lon=150.376312125

Water is a pretty scarce resource here. We have one dam that covers about
100 acres when full, plus some smaller ones that aren't quite as big as
that one. The big dam isn't holding much at the moment. We are thinking of
throwing in some Red Claw (like a freshwater lobster) and maybe some
Barramundi fingerlings.

I have no idea why Roy is doing this. All I can think of is he's a troll
with some hidden agenda. Hate, anger and angst consumes him for some
reason, and he chose me, an elderly women as his target, his psychological
punching bag. He obviously gets some kind of emotional or physical
"release" doing this, some kind of thrill a normal person can't begin to
understand. He's also attacking several other posters on rec.ponds.
> I mean did ya get ex-communicated or something? Or is this a lame eX

A lame troll attack from what I can see since these are not moderated NGs.
The people who want to pick and choose who posts and who doesn't need to
start their own moderated groups or use their killfiles. But they will not
do that...... they will destroy their own NGs before using a killfile. BTW,
he's using my NYM to try and get everyone to killfile me thinking I'll
simply go away if he succeeds. Of course that isn't going to happen.
Be prepared to start seeing forged headers and crazy messages of all kinds
with my NYM or past NYMs on them.

What's really a bummer about all this is that Roy has a lot of good
experience in fishkeeping and he's been a great asset to this group.
But when he lets loose with one of his vulgar and insulting attacks,
people are just putting him in their kill file, so whenever he does
post something on topic that could be helpful, no one will see it.

What choice do they have? You never know who he'll go off on, or what truly
disgusting things he'll post. He's almost like someone suffering from
Multiple Personality Disorder (or DID Disassociative Identity Disorder) or
maybe even Schizophrenia. We had a neighbor in NYC who was exactly like
him. Screamed similar accusations and obscenities at his wife and the
neighbors. The man suffered from alcoholism and schizophrenia his wife told
us, so we just avoided and ignored him as one does this type of person.
When he tried to run her over (I was there to see them take him away) in one
of his foul-mouth screaming rages, they finally committed him. His wife was
bruised and banged up, but ok. I'm trying to feel compassion for this man
slandering and harassing me, but he's so vile and so vicious that it I am
unable to do so.

Maybe people would rather not see the few decent and helpful messages he
posts than to be subject to his uncontrollable rage and redundant attacks on
people.

This isn't the place for armchair psychology or shotgun diagnosis, I'm
certain that everyone here has personal ghosts that they keep offline.
Whatever may motivate us, we all have a responsibility to follow basic
social norms when we are interacting in a public place.

I think 'Roy' has crossed that line.
I have never seen the man in my life but he has acted like a perverted
crazed psycho.
See a normal person I'd never make that call.
But by being such a ****** people like me have already made that call.
Plenty of other places to be a ****** on the interenet maybe he should find
one. Hell people might even like him there.
Just think it's lame he can post **** like that and peoples critisims are
met with a, don't be an 'armchair psychologist'!
Sure pops! It's a deal if Roy can avoid giving off the dangerous escaped
mental patient vibes for a few seconds towards a group member that actually
provides worthwhile input for the group.
Anyman that can only make himself look good by putting others down is weaker
than he realises.

It may be wrong to speak my mind on this but I will since you spoke yours.
I said, "He's almost like someone".... I didn't diagnose him as he has
diagnosed, accused, judged, condemned and now feels free to persecute (and
slander) me, disrupting and annoying everyone else on several NGs. I don't
even know what I supposedly did to him - do you? What did the other
victims of his abuse do to him? I'm not his only victim. The man's a
stranger to me and his behavior is far from anything I would consider even
remotely normal for an adult.

There are effective treatments today for these "ghosts" as you call them.
Attacking, slandering and harassing people online isn't one of them.

Here on Usenet the normal rules of society are tossed out the window by far
too many people.

Hey, if you feel better hanging a label on him, go for it. And let me
know if the label changes the way he posts, or improves the Usenet in
any fashion. Whatever we decide to call him, our choices remain the
same, we either engage him, or plonk him into the killfile can.
