I want to call the water department this afternoon (cst). Can someone
provide me with the pertinent questions to ask them regarding their
treatments?...Many Thanks -ED

I'd ask them for a copy of the water quality report, or if they have
one available on line. What is it that you want to know?
Hardness, TDS, pH, those would be the things I think are important as
far as the aquarium hobby goes. Do they use chlorine or chlor-amine?

Tell them you are an aquarist. To the above, add Nitrates. And ask
them if they have information on Nitrates entering the system
somewhere between their facility and your tap - happens sometimes in
agricultural areas.

Thank you...yes..that's what I want to find out from them. It's a rural
village I live in...super-duper corrupt. I wanted to have all the pertinent
questions to ask so I don't fumble around..so to speak.

Thanks MrG for helping....as I mentioned...this township is corrupt...My
water bill is $67.00 a month just to say I have running water in my house.
If I don't use it...67 bucks without fail. And they'll cut you off without
fail if you don't pay it in ten days.
The former mayor embezzeled gov. loans and the township went into
receivership..so to pay the debt..all the residents' water bill went up 4
fold. And it's on the rise. Meanwhile...we have a new city hall..a lilly
pond on the outskirts of town...oh..and a beaver damn on a quiet creek that
was supposed to be cleared away.

I'm lost on the TDS....help please :-)

Total Dissolved Solids.
It's a reflection of the osmotic pressure that the fish will
experience.
Minerals and organic substances dissolved in the water tend to draw
water from a fish, and fish vary as to how much they can tolerate.
Water with too low TDS is just as bad, if not worse.
Water hardness really only applies to the calcium and magnesium ions
in the water, you also want to now about the other stuff there as
well.
take a look at the report my city has:

I placed a call to the water plant this afternoon....He mentioned these
ingredients they employ in their treatment program...
Aqua-Mag...for corrosion
Caustic Soda...50%
pH Levels...7.3
He couldn't remark nitrate, tsd and the like.
But they did use Chlorine...not ChlorAmine
Thanks for all your help...-ED

Our water department uses ChlorITE... is that treated the same way as
chlorine/chloramine? Also, our community adds flouride for strong
teeth... any word on what that will do to the fish, other than strong
teeth?

Our report says Chloride, never heard of it.

How about not using tap water to avoid the complications all together?
I use a base of distilled water then add spring water to adjust pH and
mineral levels. I never use tap (even to drink) as there is just too
much crap in there. Additives to remove the chlorine, metals, etc are
said to not affect the fish, but I think that's BS. My fish have always
been healthy and disease free with non-poluted H2O. I also keep planted
tanks and I have noticed that many plants die quickly with treated tap.

Just did one better, I called our RO plant and they are going to come to
my house and test the water from my tap for me.
Also found out they use chlorine here, still don't know what the chloride
is, report says "natural occurrence from soil leeching"

Soil leeching is what happens when a leech field is used. A leech field
is where sewage is dumped over a silt/gravel type substance to "filter"
back into the natural water table. Like I said, stay away from tap
water! Nasty!

Chloride, as in sodium chloride, common table salt. Not a problem,
unless there is too much, then it will bother plants.

chlorite? Maybe hypochlorite, chlorine as it is stabilized in bleach?
Real chlorite is a mineral that has no chlorine in it.:

If it is hypochlorite, treat the same as chlorine, use a regular
dechlorinator chemical.

In addition to this I would ask if they use any phosphates in their
treatment. Most of the local water comes from reservoirs on the San Jacinto
river, but many of the western suburbs use water from deep limestone
aquifers. This water is extremely hard and high pH, perfect for chiclids but
hard on pipes and equipment. Some of the water is spiked with phosphoric acid
to prevent mineral buildup and corrosion. Try to find out if they do this. If
so, you might be more algae prone.

There is a whole series of ions of chlorine with varying oxygen content:
chloride: Cl-
hypochlorite: ClO-
chlorite: ClO2-
chlorate: ClO3-
perchlorat: ClO4-
