View Full Version : angels or gouramis

I could use some advice here. I have a 29 gal tank, planted, with 1 marbled
hatchet, 6 danios, 4 platies, and 5 ghost shrimp. I'd like to add a nice
pair of angels or dwarf gouramis and a couple of more marbled hatchets. I
have 2 questions:
#1. If I add more hatchets, will 2 dwarf gouramis make for too many fishes
in the upper strata?
#2. I really like angels and thought 2 angels might work better with the
hatchets, but one thing I read says never stock only 2, use 3 or 5 instead,
but something else says always stock in pairs. I'm so confused and could
really use some guidance.
My tank parameters are:
temp: 76-77
NH3=0
pH=between 7.2 and 7.8
KH=80
GH=150
NO2=0
NO3=20-40
Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hi.
I'm pretty new to this, myself, but from what I understand, I thought that
Angels were more particular about their water parameters than Gouramis --
don't Angels prefer softer, more acid water?
I have 9 honey gouramis in my 75g, and they are hardly ever in the upper
part of the tank! I have some floating (fake) plants for them, and a few
of them alternate hanging out inside the cover provided by these plants.
However, the rest spend most of their time in a rock cave I built that is
only about 3" high, behind my silk plants that are hiding the heater, or
picking through the gravel for food. So my honeys seem to be more bottom
strata, then the middle/upper they are supposed to inhabit!
HTH.

A 29g migt be a bit small for the angels, how about some dwarf gouramis
instead? They're very colorful.

Angels can tolerate a wide range of water conditions in terms of pH and
hardness. But you would not want to have more than 3 adult angels in your
29.

No problem there.

Having 3 means the boss divides his aggression on 2 fish, rather than
just one, but a 29g doesn't have a lot of room for many Angels. They
might go after your shrimp too.

Your water parameters are ok. Hatchets do better in softer more acidic
water. Yours is a more natural livebearer tank. Your danios might make
feeding the slow-eaters a bit harder (something to keep in mind). How
about Dwarf gouramis and more Platys, or Guppies.

Thanks so much for all the info you all contributed. I guess I'll go with
dwarf gouramis but this bring up another question: Do I get a pair of
gouramis or do I need 3?
thanks again.

It's not as critical, and your results will vary a lot. Ideally, one
male and 2 females would have the best chance of co-habitating well, but
many people have multiple males together and they do fine. They are
somewhat territorial but I think that their small size and more even
disposition make the results less predictable. If your tank has lots of
plants and shelter, and the gouramis are small, then you have optimized
your chances of tranquility, go for it.

Or with any of those fish the original poster already has, as it would be too
many in a 29g.
If you want the Angelfish, you'll have to ether get a larger tank or transfer
the other tank inhabitants to another tank.
I'm not saying these fish won't mix together, as they will (not too sure about
the Danios), just the amounts.
