View Full Version : Does filtered "jet" oxygenate as well as "cascade"?

A friend just gave me a 30 gallon hooded tank with a Whisper filter and no
other aeration. The tank has only 4 fish and some snails, with no real
plants. He had the water level high enough so the water returning from the
filter was discharged into the tank below the water's surface, producing
ripples on the surface but no bubbles (and virtually no noise). Will this
oxygenate the water sufficiently, especially if I add more fish? Or should I
lower the water level so the filtered water cascades and breaks the surface?

True, all you need is a ripple. I have a 40 gallon tank with only a Penguin
170 power filter as oxygenation. Yet all 60 (small) fish in the tank are
healthy and happy.
