It would help if you stated what you had......Other than the tank,
which is pretty well a given, its hard to say what is and what is not
suitable for marine use and what type of marine tank your looking to
setup.........FOWLR or FO or Reef or ??????????????????????

There are marine NGs you can ask this on. They have some very knowledgeable
people who can better answer your questions regarding salt water aquarium

Yea, inother words Carol Gulley is telling you she does not know and
does not have any links to sal****er (marine forums, since its way to

answered......might even be nbice to answer them without asshole Carol

There are some people on this newsgroup that also keep Marine, Roy being
one of the most notable that I know of. If you prefer usenet to forums
you might try out:-

rec.aquaria.marine
rec.aquaria.marine.misc
rec.aquaria.marine.reefs

I don't know how much traffic they get not having any interest in
keeping Marine fish myself....others will know better....

4x2x2 feet tank, currently used to house a variety of plec and one
lonely gourami. i have aqua one cannister filter, air pump and stone,
heater dunno what wattage but it keeps the tank at a stable temp gravel
and water(lol)there is also a jewel filter in the tank but it is not
going to stay in there as it requires constant attention

i have absoloutly no idea what different types of marine tank setup
are but i do want to have a box fish(dunno what breed etc) as i fell in
love with one i saw.

i currently have four tropical tanks so i spend a lot of time with them,
dedication is not a problem!

i want to make sure the water and environment will be sustainable over
time and that the fish will be happy to live in the tank.

most of the shop0s in my area just want to sell you stuff not help you
expand your hobby!

many thanks in advice

Derek.......afterall birds of a feather flock together....Even make a
filter for Roy....then just forget I exist, and if everyone else does
just this same thing, no one should ever get wrapped up in my posts to
beigin with unless they have a desire to.........Sure I may reply to a
post someone makes, but yur filters as such will keep my points of
view out of your eyesight and never ending compulsion to reply to ****
you should never have gotten involved in anyhow..And when yu start or
other start paying my ISP bill then I may give you consideration in
doing what you request.......until then, Don;t waste your time telling
me what I can or can't do........and requests are not honored either.

Now I have some issues with me doing this...forgive me....

1. When you post on-topic the information that you give is invaluable
and I've learnt a lot from this

2. Derek is OK - why go for him?

3. Your posts will put off any newbies who don't know that they need to
filter...

4. If Carol did what you think she did why is she so desperate for me to
share my research???? (haven't and won't)

5. If I kill-file you how do I know what you are doing to destroy the
groups???

6. How much is your ISP bill???? I'm sure a lot of us would chip in

As I said, mail me....what are you scared of that you won't do that????
Maybe you are scared that you might actually like me???? You have my
email account yet still want to thrash this out on the groups....what's
your agenda - to kill them off???? I believe most people on this
newsgroup would love this debate taken off-line....

Just clean tank well, no further need for gravel in a sal****er setup.
Marine tanks need to be kept in the area of 75 to 80, although some
folks run them as high as 82 or so degrees.....the key is keeping the
tank stabil in regards to temperature swings....Roughly 3 to 5 watts
per gal is the norm for a heater. Best to run two heaters whose total
wattage equals the needed wattage incase one sticks you do not cook
the tank like one larger heater can do.
>><> i have absoloutly no idea what different types of marine tank setup
>><>are but i do want to have a box fish(dunno what breed etc) as i fell in
>><>love with one i saw.

A box fish is a breed of fish......in the same species IIRC with
puffers and cow fish. YOu can get by with the lights you already have
if yu do not elect to keep any corals, but you could still have some
liverock which is highly recomended. Live rock and live sand is the
heart and soul of a marine setup, and if you use 1.5# or so live rock
per gal you can just about eliminate the need for any filtration and
get by with a simple hob type Aqua clear filter for some current flow
and mechanical filtration and a few powerheads. I owuld not use
crushed coral for the tank substrate as it adds little in the way of
nbeneficial anaything to a marine tank.Use arogonite (calcium based)
sand. It allows better use of bethic critters ability to utilize it.
You need a clean up crew (hermit crabs, snails etc) and personally I
would go with a shallow sand bed and not have the worry of getting gas
buildup in a deep sand bed., At one time deep sand beds were the
things, and they still sre in some cases, but best, easiest way with
less problems overall is a shallow 1" or so depth of sand. You can use
regular silica based sand as well but nothing beats real aragonite
sand for a sal****er tank.

Depending on what wattage your lights are, perhaps you can swap out a
bulb for a suitable marine type setup and then keep a few soft type
corals around such as zoos and mushrooms, as they add character to any
sal****er setup. Cleaner or other type shrimp can be added.......but
you have to decide what exactly you want in the way of fish as nmot
all fish are compatable with a reef setup, some fish rely on a reef
setup and others could get along without anyhting but a glass box with
water and salt in it just fine.....

You need an ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and PH test kit. Freshwater
test kits will not usually work as marine tanks are nmormally kept at
a higher ph than freshwater is (8.1 to 8.5 or so) Your gonna need a
refractometer (preferred) or a hydrometer to keep check of your
specific gravity (salt content). With fish only you can go with a
1.021 to 1.023 SG add corals or any tyope and your better off with a
1.023 to 1.025 or even higher SG.

As for your present filter, marine tanks are counter to what a fresh
water tank is. In freshwater folks use the filter to grow and house
bacteria, in a marine tank enclosed filters etc normally do not, as
they turn into a nitrate factory, which is undesireable for the most
part in a marine setup........

A skimmer is nice to have but not necessary in a fish only (FO) tsank.
LIve rock and live sand is pricey, but there is workarounds and
methods to get around these problems, that work, but takes time...Here
in the USA premium cured LR routinely sells for $7.00 or so a pound,
but even a 5# chuck is beneficial to any tank than no live rock at
all. A tank with sufficieint LR needs not real filtration as the
liverock is the actual filter except for mechanical removal of larger
debri, and its virtually unheard of a LR equipped tank ever getting a
ammonia or niitite or nitrate problem like a fresh water tank can
have......

Check out reefcentral.com
creativereefing.com
sal****erfish.com
and wetweb media for lots of info on marine setups.

per gal is the norm for a heater.

LIve rock and live sand is pricey, but there is workarounds and
methods to get around these problems, that work, but takes time...Here
in the USA premium cured LR routinely sells for $7.00 or so a pound,
but even a 5# chuck is beneficial to any tank than no live rock at
all. A tank with sufficieint LR needs not real filtration as the
liverock is the actual filter except for mechanical removal of larger
debri, and its virtually unheard of a LR equipped tank ever getting a
ammonia or niitite or nitrate problem like a fresh water tank can
have......

Check out reefcentral.com

and wetweb media for lots of info on marine setups.

Well, I actually think that you gave a good reply
starters....additionally, you are quite right more specialist Marine
forums or web based stuff will also help....

Unless of course we have multiple earthlink posters...for which I

Roy can give you good advice....the newsgroups I posted also will also
do so as will the web based forums that Roy suggested....I know of noone
else on the freshwater groups than give you better advice than Roy
although I may be doing one or two down by saying this, but I say Roy
because he is the only one that has the real experience to my

You have to ask him Gill? It's because Roy can't tolerate anyone he feels
isn't on his side in crucifying me.

Stop and think Gill - he uses *MY NYM* when posting his toxic waste - and
his own otherwise. This is a vicious troll trick to get their victim
killfiled and get them a bad name. Now he's nym-shifting to avoid
killfiles, just look at his headers.

That was his BS excuse to crucify me, harass me and now net-stalk me
Gill,... THINK!!!! You wont win his favor with complimenting him, or
telling him you wont share the information with me, even though you know
he's out to destroy me and my family for no other reason than that he's
vicious and mentally ill. And now *this comment of yours* is making me
wonder..... you seem to be using it to try and win his favor.

> 5. If I kill-file you how do I know what you are doing to destroy the

Gill.... wise up,... he's out to destroy these groups using *ME* and his
imaginary wildlife agents and pulled website as the excuse. If his website
was pulled it was because he had something illegal on the site. No ISP
pulls a website because someone calls them and asks them to pull it. This
is just like Antonio using his daughter as his excuse. If it's not the
daughter it's something else. Please, spend a few minutes reading some
troll sites and learn why and how they accomplish their goals. You're not
going to get anywhere with him.

YES! That's his agenda. Even a blind person could see it. Maybe it's
needs to be thrashed out here instead of all the cloak and dagger by e-mail.
You keep telling me to keep silent, not defend myself, not say anything,
ignore him, be harassed and attacked along with the NGs and suffer in
silence. I'm tired of it Gill. It's not getting any of us anywhere.
Handling this sick individual with kid gloves and patronizing him is a waste
of time. There's no way to get rid of him so what's the solution? He knows
damn well I had nothing to do with his legal problems since I don't even
know who he is, the miserable liar.

That's not possible because *HE* wants it here... it's FUN for him, it's
exciting as he's already admitted on rec.ponds. Must I pull his old message
and post it here? There's no way he'll take this "fun and excitement"
off-line. What an empty, miserable, lonely life he must have..........

But your big kudos is that you do normally keep it off-line and try and
keep it that way and are a nice person to boot.....keep it that
way....I've got to usenet before email....hey, you never know maybe Roy
had the guts to mail me.....(doubt it)....

Let us keep it off the groups....you have been brilliant in doing this
to date....and I know that I have been busy with living real life...but
it happens....and maybe should more often do this....but just coz
reality gets in the way doesn't mean I've stopped caring about what is
going on with our groups.....

You're asking for marine advice in a group full of freshwater aquarists.
Try rec.aquaria.marine.reefs. It's an active newsgroup specific to
marine aquaria.

IMO, canister filters are only suitable for fish-only marine setups, and
only with some additional biofiltration like a bio-wheel. Canisters are
hard to clean and tend to become nitrate factories so adding an easily
accessible prefilter is helpful.

If you want to keep inverts, remove all the biomedia and use the
canister for water movement and/or chemical filtration.

It's called rec.aquaria. **freshwater** .misc for a reason Gav ;~). We
could easily advise you on equipment requirements moving from salt to fresh,
and we could discuss the various freshwater set-ups which are possible.
There are also various marine set-ups possible, but for this you're better
off in a marine forum or marine newsgroup. That's where you'll find a
variety of opinions and recommendations to choose from.

Actually most visitors typically comment on how well behaved and civil it is
in rafm, especially as there are often many different opinions to reconcile.
It's simply 'respect', for opinions, hopefully being expressed in a positive
and helpful way. Sometimes that respect (given and received) falters and
then it gets less positive or helpful. Almost feels like a family BBQ ;~)

LOL
yea easy enuf to just swap it all accross mate, cannisters are great for
marine just clean a bit more often.
Grab some black mollies for your marine tank.
easy fish and nice to have them for 2 months before trying something
expensive.
Beware any metal in the tank and that includes impellor shafts in
cannisters!

SO dry and yet so funny!
A 4x2x2 marine tank is a great size, but you will need lots of buckets with
lids if your gonna collect sea water!
sorry but someone has to soldier on the OT thread
heh heh
I got stingrays btw, 6x2x2
very very cool!
I recon get that tank filled, keep the filters running and then just go to
the beach fishing and bring back new fish!!
not only cheap but very cool
