View Full Version : Shiners

A couple of days ago I was in LFS and asked the fish aisle manager what
they had that was good for outdoors. He took me over to a tank with
some "red shiners" (Notropis lutrensis). I remembered Flash talking
about shiners and I wonder if these are the same ones? I bought four.

They are lovely little fish. The males are silvery-blue with bright red
fins, and the females are a gentle silver. They're very active and
settled right into the tank. I fed the other fish while they were
acclimating and they tried to get at the flakes through the bag. So far
they've kept to themselves and shown no signs of aggression towards
their tankmates. Even better, they're easily able to dodge the Florida
flagfish.

As I was buying the fish, the manager scooped out a female, looked at
her from above, and realized her spine was crooked (probably from a net
injury). He offered her to me for free. Otherwise he was going to feed
her to one of the sal****er fish because that store won't knowingly sell
damaged fish. As I said that I'd be happy to give her a home, I thought
about the recent thread on rescuing fish. Guess I'm a soft touch too.

The ones I saw were more whitey, but that's probably just the stress
of being in a shop. They didn't grab me as interesting, and I didn't
really get the fact that they said I needed a clam as well!

(I only buy dry goods from that store anyway, I don't trust their
quarantine procedures - but they do get an interesting range).

Excellent! I have a powder blue cichlid in similar circumstances - the
stripes on one side are odd, like there's a join - they stop and then
restart at another angle, but fine on the other side of the body.
It's quite able to swim and defend itself though. Lovely fish.
