My huge old green Severum now has one huge pop eye. What's the chances
for full recovery & time frame? I did a major water change, and was looking
for some advice on a treatment method that doesn't involve major filter
media change as well? I'm an old school guy that liked to use salt with my
livebearers, but not sure if this is advisable for Severums? Thanks!

Pop eye is more a symptom, than an actuall disease. It's causes range
from an eye injury, to organ failure. First look to your water
paramiters. If there good, then look at nutrition, types of food, etc.
Check the fish's body, any signs of parasires, or disease. I doubt its
caused by nitrogen building up behind the eye, ( gas bubble disease). So
that leaves organ troubles, as the most likley cause. You mentioned its
an old fish, so you might want to investigate into useing an internal
type medicine. Unfortunatly, this type of problem is more a matter of
ruling out what is causeing it, than being able to say exactly what is
the cause.

I just tried it with a hypo. The fish didn't even flinch. I'll let you
know how it worked out.

For those of you that are interested, I lanced the side of his eye in 3
places all around the popped out section. He has improved tremendously in
the past couple of weeks, so this treatment may be a nice alternative or
addition to meds. I never would have done it at all, if someone didn't say
their vet did it to one of his/her fish.

Let us know if the fluid builds up behind his eye again. You may have hit
upon the cure.

Today he looked almost perfect again. His aggressiveness and mating
displays have also returned. The only other thing I did was water changes,
so this is really looking up. I think of all the nice big fish I've lost
over the years, that may have been saved by this method.
