Missing eye

Didn't someone not to long ago, post that they had a fish with a
missing eye, or eyes?
I thought they said it was due to another fish in the tank, but wasn't
sure of which one of it's tankmates did it... An aggerssion thing,
which let it slip by me, untill now...
I can't find the post, but wanted to let the poster know that a
missing eye, or two, could be Fish Tuberculosis (fish TB). Other
symptoms would be loss of appetite, stays seclued, lies on side on
bottom, stomach appears sunken, white blotching along with frayed fins
and tail... Said to be treated with Kanamycin and vitamin B-6. It can
also be transmitted to humans. Is suggested that you call 520 - 298 -
7814 for consultation before attempting to treat.............

I posted in the Platy thread yesterday regarding a Mollie that looked as
if her eye had been sucked at....is this the one that you are thinking
of? I thought maybe she had been attacked by one of the Yoyo loaches...

The tank has been running for just over a year - no additions made since
last September - most of the fish in it were transferred from a smaller
tank. The Mollie in question was home bred....the only symptom she
showed before dying was the eye thing - this was an overnight injury and
extremely unpleasant - it was like the eye was hanging from just a
thread....I was going to put her out of her mysery but nature got there
first... :-(

Thanks for your concern Frank :-)....By the way I am keeping a close eye
on the other fish just in case - it doesn't always pay to make
assumptions....

BTW having said about assumptions do you think I'm right to suspect the
two Yoyo loaches (each around 3" in size)? Tank occupants are:-

3 Mollies (home bred) - used to be 4 :-(
4 Harlequin Rasboras
5 Glowlight Tetras
2 Pearl Gouramis
2 Yoyo Loaches

Tank is a 30 UK gall....

Eather the gouramis or the loaches. If I had to pick just one, I would
agree with you - trouble is, picking which loach to hang ;-)

Maybe I should persuade my son to let me move the loaches....they would
go real well in either the 47.5 UK gall where I already have two or in
the 130 gall which has 3 (about to be 6) Clown Loaches....I could offer
to buy him alternative fish for his tank....he's desperate for a
Pleco....but the one he wants is round £20-30....

Not likely to happen again - loaches just aren't that aggressive.

Ya, the LPS has a half dozen with white strips that's the neatest
looking things, but priced to high ($50.00). They have been there for
almost 2 months now, and I know (well - I think) he only paided half
that or less. The cheap son-of-a-gun won't go down (I want two) and I'm
so cheap I squeek, so we are at a stand still. He calls me whenever
something looks a little funny with the fish, or their behavior
changes, wanting me to come take a look, and treat if needed. I already
told him that two of those pleco's need to be quarantined at my house
(so I can keep an eye on them), but he hasn't bought into that one - -
- - yet ;-) .................... Frank
PS - guess nobody else wants to talk to us (in this post/thread
anyway)...............

Do you know what type of Plecs they are or the L number? They do sound
neat...one of the places I go tends to specialize in Plecs and always
have a wide variety - I have a Snowball, a Queen Arabesque and a Leopard
from there...the only time he got it wrong was with the Leopard - he
told me it would only grow to 15cm and I took the chance of taking him
on his word....what he meant was 15" - eeekkk...Fortunately the Plec was
destined for the 6 foot tank :-)

I kept up on fish names, bought the latest books etc. when I was an
active member of the fish club and part owner of the pet shops. I'm now
to that age where I could care less what they call them. They eather
don't know, or won't tell me at the pet shop eather. One of those games
between two over-the-hill guys - he knows I'm going to get them, but
have to make room for them. He wants to trade me for the two elephant
nose in that tank - trouble is, I like all my fish in the tank, and he
knows it. He *thinks* he's going to sell me a 120 gal. tank ;-)

White striped for about US$50? Sounds like a zebra. They are cool
looking, but extremely hard to find (I gave up after searching 5 months).

Curious as to why you say this is not a fish for a beginner. Are you
basing this on cost alone or are they particularly delicate?

I had a zebra for a few years until I moved and sold him. He was hardy
but extremely shy. We didn't have any usuaual losses during shipping
either. Problem is, it's a bummer to spend $25 (I had a discount) on a
fish to have him only come out once a week. L numbers for Hypancistrus
zebra according to Planet Catfish are L046, L098, L173.

I know what you mean about shy Plecs :-( The most outgoing one I have is
the Snowball Plec who comes out in the afternoons....It is very rare
that I see anything more than the tail of the Queen Arabesque...the new
Leopard Plec seems to have vanished in the big tank - I spotted him
around a week ago but he seems to have moved house (driftwood) - if he
truly does grow to 15" I guess he will be visisble then - lol

The price and demand are also going up because the Zebra was featured
on the covers of at least two of the aquarium magazines in recent
months.
