I've read conflicting temperature preferences for the RTBS...one site
states a preference of 75*F...some say 78*F...some say 76*-82*F...My tank
is holding at 80*F (If I can read that inny winny teeny mercury
right)..I'm considering bringing it down to around 77*-78*F...any thoughts
on this...or am I disturbing things too much here?
Thanks bunches...-ED

If you have ten people who keep a certain type of fish, you will have at
least 8 different opinions and they all think they are right : )
Just depends on what they have had luck with...I would bet any where in or
around those temps is probably good, when I was reading about the best temp
to breed betta's in I came across the same thing, I seen what worked best
for my fish and went with that, which is 80-82 degree's

77F seems to work very well for the majority of tropicals, not too hot that
they are always hungry or it's expensive to heat, and not too cool that
their colours fade and their activity slows down.

Roger That...Thanks for the holler!
I picked up a couple of cories today. They're a turquoise-colored, 'bout a
3/4" long. But I've got a real dilemma on my hands.
There are three families in my town that are fishheads...one family is
relocating towards B'ham, AL. Their son broke their small tank today in the
moving process. The mom came by and asked me if I would mind taking a fish
off of their hands. After explaining the broken tank deal and such, she
told me it was a "gorgeous gold and black" fish.
Well..I said sure..she comes in later this AM with a sure'nuff "gorgeous"
gold and black........OSCAR !!!! D@#M I thought...Yes..It is far beyond any
specimen or photos I've kept or seen. It's 3" long now. I didn't bother
asking any questions. It has the picture of health. Now what in
sam-d@#n-he-- am I gonna do with this "gorgeous" thing. My tankmates won't
survive. I really hadn't planned on this...If I remember, Oscars like to
tear things up..Their appetite is ferocious...and They get a little bigger
than I care to have in a 55gal. Now I'm really forced into a corner on
making another tank. There's noone else here that can take him. And He's
such a specimen..
So that's my day thus far. Bittersweet comes to mind right 'bout now. Do
ya think I can stuff him with food and He'll lose interest in the
danios?..(=\...Ok chiclids pros...step forth...fire away. I'm cornered
here.
Thanks Again......-ED

Boy is that bittersweet...

Sounds like you already know the pros and cons just fine. ;-) Oscars
tear things up, appetite is ferocious, they're hard on tankmates, and
they get large. They're also gorgeous, interactive, and it sounds like
this one has already chosen you to be its keeper. I agree that a 55
gallon is cramped for an adult oscar.

Don't they make tank dividers for standard 55 gallon tanks? Might buy
you a little time while you build him a home. I wouldn't count on the
zebras surviving if you just toss a 3" oscar in with them.

I could make a divider out of plexi-glass for the interim...doing without
the divider--this could be a cool experiment or a predictable disaster.
Juggling the food, temperature, providing cover..The philadendrums are stiff
and well shaped for cover..the sandstones are hefty, to say the least..the
tank has alot of running room and hide-outs. That was the problem this past
month with the 'scaping. Trying to cover all bases in the mindset of fear
and solitude. While I'm not a huge fan of philadendrum..it is the catch-all
answer to these questions..and I laid them out in a tiering fashion, so to
speak.
Like NetMax mentioned about 77*F, finding the point where his appetite will
slow somewhat..and his color won't fade...I'll probably have a sleepless
night watching his mood and behavior..He went to the bottom under a phila
leaf by the driftwood for 20 minutes, then came up and is getting to know
the tank..I gave him 3 pieces of tubifex (not whole squares) which he
snapped at with total authority.>:< I'm counting on the speed of the danios
for their survival until I can manage (err..umm..throw together) a proper
setup. I didn't setup this tank to play total god with. I didn't even want
oscars this go around. But I know the neighbor would have just thrown it on
the ground or flushed it...and I'm not standing for that..not one bit.
But this is ONE GORGEOUS SOB, bar none. Thanks for the help, Altum....-ED

The last time I had a commercial tank divider (~1970) it was of
perforated plastic to permit water flow. With plexiglass you'd want to
do something to keep the water good on both sides of the divider.

How did you arrive at the number 1537? Just wondering.

Yeah...It's like I said before...a bittersweet turn of fate. The lady
that brought him over thought it was a 'goldfish'. Well, yeah..it's a
goldfish, alright!! I like the oscars, they just weren't in the formula
I laid out for this tank's design. Truth be known..I'm seriously bummed
about having to sweat the issues of who stays and who goes. I'm too old
for this. My neighbor came over when I called him about the
adoption..he fell to the floor with envy. It truely is a stout
speciman...and his colours are like a rembrandt impression. My neighbor
can't take him off my hands..he runs a 55 gal com tank chunk full of
fish...countless live-bearers..a pair of breeding silver
angels...mollies..guppies...swords..bettas...shark s..cories..tetras...all
in one tank...I call it the viagra commune tank. He is totally reckless
with its maintenance...He just wants to look at fish..not interested in
the husbandry end of fish-keeping. But..he did manage to have a pair of
angels spawn in there...go figure? What are the odds that this lone
oscar will get along with the other tankmates?...too broad a question.
I call this the grand accident experiment.
Take care......-ED

Yep. He's adopted you all right.

Wasn't it you that was talking about discus when you first got the tank?
Hannibal needs to work on his discus impression. ;-)

That was me :-P ...then I decided to move from the expense of discus to
the umm...lightly populated planted tank. And here we are..06:30 CST
Wednesday, and all the zebras are still accounted for. I read about
some cichlid at Foster&Smith that had a pleasant, non-aggressive
behaviour, and I wished Hannibal had inherited that gene. Temperature
appears to be holding at 78*F. Have a good day......-ED

Hannibal:

I asked him about that....he just got a brilliant color about him and
asked when was supper ready.....

Hannibal is an excellent name. Interesting colour pattern. Same on both
sides?

Yeah...It's like I said before...a bittersweet turn of fate. The lady that
brought him over thought it was a 'goldfish'. Well, yeah..it's a goldfish,
alright!! I like the oscars, they just weren't in the formula I laid out
for this tank's design. Truth be known..I'm seriously bummed about having
to sweat the issues of who stays and who goes. I'm too old for this. My
neighbor came over when I called him about the adoption..he fell to the
floor with envy. It truely is a stout speciman...and his colours are like a
rembrandt impression. My neighbor can't take him off my hands..he runs a 55
gal com tank chunk full of fish...countless live-bearers..a pair of breeding
silver
angels...mollies..guppies...swords..bettas...shark s..cories..tetras...all in
one tank...I call it the viagra commune tank. He is totally reckless with
its maintenance...He just wants to look at fish..not interested in the
husbandry end of fish-keeping. But..he did manage to have a pair of angels
spawn in there...go figure? What are the odds that this lone oscar will get
along with the other tankmates?...too broad a question. I call this the
grand accident experiment.
Take care......-ED

Still playing with 2 newsreaders, eh? ;~)

I think if you research the Red Oscar, this is what you might have, so the
sides might darken to a deeper orange. An Oscar is quite a bit more
commitment than you were probably planning, seeing as how they are so long
lived and personable. Sometimes my tank stocking strategies go according to
fate too. You can only plan so much ;~).

You got that right!...Strange Fate..Stranger Fortune. The Outlook
(express) has features that I like, and better features that are
absent. I like its janitorial ease of use. I'm trying to gain ground
with Thunderbird since my spam is on the rise now. And Opera's really
nice, save the fact that I haven't found the lower limit of headers I
want downloaded from the server.

I've been looking at the Red's data here and there...but Net, this thing
has the color of old gold on a canvas...dingy isn't the word...just
...hell...I'll get a camera one of these days. It's 10:21 CST here,
still have all the inmates :-\ ...
I won't mind him...I'm just forced into a position of getting him a
proper home built...money's the issue in my domain. I could always go
pick up a small tank for the danios...sure would be easier on the
wallet..I've got around $500.00 in this tank as it stands now...I'm back
on bologna and crackers..but boy, DO I HAVE A TANK...way. way easy on
the eye. I've thought about putting a skirt on it and taking out to dinner.

some one told me yesterday that blue Oscars are injected with dye, I did not
think that was true, as I thought when I lived in Florida they were very
common?
Ed, i know you been changing back and forth with the newsreaders, i wanted
to tell you i notice sometimes you post in green or a different font, i
think for some people it makes it hard to read, someone said that to me
once, you might want to check.
Nik

Should I abandon the posting sent in HTML and send them plain text?....I
notice that Thunderbird will ask me which format I wish to send..I select
HTML to include former postings where the author included the
emoticons(happy face things)...I was happy with Outlook Express and I'll
stick with it...I'll just cancel its mail account so I can let Thunderbird
handle the junk mail. Thanks for pointing that out for me, really!!...-ED

Post in plain text. Not all newsreaders render HTML and some servers
even delete HTML postings.

The newsgroups is the only place where I set my fonts for plain text.
Not sure if it's the newsreaders or the news readers, but there are
some plain text holdouts here in this group, I believe, and I don't
wish to be misunderstood.

When I was younger and started using a computer..high school, collage, there
was a program or something we all used the rainbow writing in chat rooms and
email, AIM, and it was pretty cool, as I got older I kind of changed it to
the cursive handwriting for my emails and purple or red writing...lol
And yest you want plain not html at least for newsgroups, email you can keep
on html
