View Full Version : Feeding Fresh Veggies

I've see at several LFSs zucchini in the tanks for feeding and I've
read something about leaf lettuce as well. Are there other veggies
that are suitable for tropical communities? Any to avoid? It would
be nice to provide the guys in the tank with some special treats
(other than nibbling the tips of my fingers which they've taken to
doing while vacuuming the gravel).
Thanks!

I feed mine anything green. brussel sprouts, peas, cucumber, zucchini,
broccoli, lettuce..... I tried carrot, and although they did eat it I'm not
so sure it's good for them, so I didn't do it again. Don't ask me why I
don't think it's good for them though - just a feeling and I might be
totally wrong on this.

Any tips for those of us that want to use fresh veggies but haven't done
so yet?
How big of a piece do you use?
Do you always blanch all veggies first? How long?
How long do you leave veggies in the aquarium before taking them out?

I use something sold locally as Italian squash, about the same as
zucchini. they are sold about 6 to 8 inches long. I do nothing to
prepare them, snap them to a rock with a rubber band and drop them in
the tank. Pleco finishes them in a day or two.
I also tried carrots, nothing ate them and they went all slimey. even
I didn't eat them then.

I start with a very small piece, and if it goes away real quick, or there
seems to be a great many fish trying to get at it at once, I increase the
servings.
> Do you always blanch all veggies first? How long?
I do. About 10-15 seconds in the microwave for most chunks. Makes it softer,
hence easier to eat, and makes it not so bouyant. I poke a lead plant weight
through it to keep it on the bottom.
> How long do you leave veggies in the aquarium before taking them out?
I try to serve a small enough amount that there isn't any left to remove. I
wouldn't leave the veggy, which amounts to decaying plant matter, for more
than overnight. If no one is interested, pull it out of there.

Feeding them carrots is a marvelouse idea. The BetaCerotene in the carrots
brightens the fish up big time!

Peas needs to be peeled, and when they are they sink, the rest is like Dinky
says for my part.
I mount and tie the vegies on a suction cup and stick that onto the glass
instead of using stones or metal to sink the goodies down with.

I read somewhere that Paprika, if sprinked among the food, will have the same
effect. Any thoughts? Safety/effectiveness/side effects... I haven't done
any research on it yet.

Peppers? just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding, it's this one?:

Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't have thought of that :) Makes sense though,
considering the taste!

Green Pepper:

From the Bell Pepper Family. Not from a hot pepper family. Although,
I'm told that some like garlic but I'm not ready to test that in my tank.
