View Full Version : koi making mess in pond

May 12th 06, 08:19 PM
We have large kidney shaped pond in the country. We were told the koi
would clean up the greens. Well the pond is so muddy that we can't
even see the fish. 5 of our 22 inch bass died last year. They were
like our kids pets and anyone fishing enjoyed catching them. I think
it through the oxygen levels off and being so muddy they couldn't find
food. My opinion. The bass are out and we would like to have the gold
carp instead. Saw a pond full of them and so much fun to watch.

We feed them in the same place every day but when you put a net in
there they disappear and are spooky for a few days.

How can we trap those koi. They are huge and much bigger than the bass
we had. Is there a plan that shows how to make a trap? We have
someone who wants the fish for an over grown pond.

Thanks,
Evie

I don't know if it's possible for you to drain down this pond with a pump,
then use a large fishnet or some kind of large bucket to catch them. It
would take several people and large koi are heavy. Baring that I would try
a seine net and a bunch of friends. If this is a lined pond it sounds like
it needs a good cleaning. This is the time to do it. You can easily catch
them when the water level is very low.

A cast net works well. Feed, thrown the net, collect your fish. Works if
the pond is large enough for the net. I susupect it is if you have bass in
it. Another, but more complex alternative is to get them used to coming
into a weir and then close it off once they are in. We have a 'leg in our
pond that we close off with a screen. Some of the koi have actually jumped
the screen...to the tune of going a foot in the air above it. Dangerous for
them if they don't land in the pond!

Its fun bow fishing. Carp and its related cousins are considered rough
or trash non game fish in most places, and there is not a better
thrill than to stick a 20 or so pound carb with an arrow, and then get
it ashore......You can pickle the meat and its quite tasty.

By now you realize a koi in an unlined pond will sift through the
bottom looking for food like a very busy vacuum cleaner without a bag,
resulting in muddy water. Catching the big ones without harming them
is probably best done as a group effort. A couple dragging a seine
towards another with a bag or dip net and someone to herd it into the
bag or dip net trap. Some koi keepers prefer a large plastic bag
because some net damage is more likely to occur when trapping big
ones.

My limited experience has indicated slow movements with the net and
herder's tend to excite less and make the fish move more slowly and
easier to herd into the catch net. Chasing a koi with a dip net may
be fun for younger people, but it is a waste of time for me.
