View Full Version : Rasing snails?

I know this sounds crazy. I like snails (as pets). I have two small tanks.
The kind that are plastic with snap on lid with lots of slots on them. They
are sold in pet shops either as small aquariums or terariums.

One is about a gallon and the other is about twice that. My guess is that
they are 5 and 10 liter, many things here being metric. The large one has
a carbon/glass wool filter run by an air hose, the other has a small motor
pump with a sponge filter that pumps the water into the air over the top
of the tank.

I plan to keep them outside in the summer, where it currently goes from 60F
at night to about 80F during the day. It will get warmer later in
the summer, to about 90F at it's peak. I plan to keep the tanks under a
balcony so they get a few hours of direct sun in the late afternoon.

There are a handful of days when the sciracco is in, (the wind not
the Volkswagen) where it goes up to about 100F.

In the winter, I would bring the tanks indoors where it stays a constant
60F-65F.

The only garden snails I see are tiny black ones that congregate on the
rim of a large pot we use a fish pond. My wife asked at the LFS for
suggestions on what to put in it and she was sold guppies. They have
survived the winter outside and flourished now that the weather is warm.

I would prefer to get some larger snails. We have some in my tank that
we bought at the LFS, that look like apple snails, but between the total
lack of knowledge of my wife, who goes to the fish store for me, the
probable lack of knowlegde at the LFS (it's a mall type pet store),
and the language barrier, I'm not very likely to get anything except
a "snail".

Any suggestions, including negative comments and alternate uses are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Geoff.

I have "apple" "mystery" snails, what is it you want to know?
there is a good page on snails ill give you the
link...http://www.applesnail.net/
some stores mislabel snails, they will call them all apple snails, or all
mystery snails, they are pretty cheap, I don't know where you live but here
they are about one or two dollars.
If you have some specific questions let me know and I will see if I can
help.
have a nice day

I only raise snails as food for my loaches. I have a 5.5 gallon tank
that they have taken over, and I throw them flake food a three or four
times a week. The best part is that I didn't have to buy them. I was
cleaning my Fluval filter, and found that the inside if the filter,
especially the foam blocks were crawling with them. I had added some
plants about a month earlier, and I never noticed any snails on the
plants, but there they were. I carefully collected them all I could,
and put them in the tank. Since then I have a self-sustaining food
source for my two loaches.
