View Full Version : What does everyone like best about keeping fish?

Hi All,
I was sitting down this morning just quietly watching the fish in the
new big tank (130g)....a Panda Cory was sitting on a piece of driftwood
looking like he was delivering a lecture to three, very attentive Clown
Loaches sitting on the substrate facing him - then I saw the Pl*c glide
in to find out what was going on...haven't seen him for over a week -
these fish definitely seem to be plotting something....he, he
While watching the fish I started musing about what it is exactly that I
love the most about keeping fish....it certainly isn't the algae
scraping or the water changes although I don't really mind doing
them....I love creating the environments for them and tending the plants
and looking at a thing of beauty that contains happy, content
fish....but most of all I think I enjoy watching them going about their
little lives and how they all interact and have their own little
characters :-)
All this set me to wonder how everyone else feels about their fish.....

Was wandering the same thing only the other day. My husband likes to
watch them but that is where the interest stops. I just love the whole
'interaction' with them too. I get such a buzz when you are doing a
water change and they come and nibble your finger or arm. Makes you
feel so pleased that they are that comfortable with you. I love it
that they come to the corner whenever you walk past or come up to the
glass and watch you when you are doing something close by. I also love
the way they don't answer back, demand to watch 'The Wiggles' and tell
you that they don't like what you have given them for dinner.
I suppose mostly it is such a sense of achievement when everything is
going well and they are thriving.
Such a lovely topic

I like coming down the next morning after setting up a new tank & buying new
fish, and seeing it all worked out .... they all look good "not stuck to the
filter". I also like watching them at night just because its relaxing, the
sound of the water puts me to sleep. My adult three spot gourami, is now
acting like a parent of the two baby gourami, he will swim in-between when
they are chasing each other, which they do a lot, they will stop and go to
separate sides of the tank, its pretty funny to watch. One of my new angels
is shadowing the big gourami, stays right beside him all day until I shut
the light off, then he goes and hangs with the other angel.

I have wanted to keep fish since I was about 8 years old and fascinated
with marine/aquatic life. I only just began to do it about 3 months
ago. 30 years later. Part of the motive impulse was my daughter, but
she is too young to really care (although she always asks "can I help
you Daddy feed the fish?")
I think you hit the mark in noting how tending and caring for a small,
organized, happy environment (what the old Greeks would call a "kosmos"
[also an ornament, a "thing of beauty") reflects happiness to the
caretaker. Like gardening perhaps? I know that watching the fish in
the world I struggle to make a happy one for them gives me a lot of
inner peace.
I'm a beginner so that is just my neophyte consideration :)

I enjoyed spending the money more than making it when I sold all those young
koi this spring. ;-) I bought two more 680g tanks (only $14.99 each at
W*W), 2 more water pumps........

I like having aquatic environments around the house. I like watching the
schools of fish swim, and watching plant growth over time.
I like learning about water chemistry, natural habitats, fish and plant
biology and classification, all that stuff. Sources of information were
books and some other aquarists, but in the last 10 years the Internet
has become a more important source.
I liked building an aquarium stand and a few light hoods. I also enjoy
slightly modifying the filter plumbing to suit.
And I regard some fish as pets: my old clown loaches and goldfish.

Same here...Water changing isn't any different from going to the store for
something. It only takes a few minutes a week and makes such a difference
in the well-being of all the tankmates. And a 5gal buckets makes for good
exerice!

You summed it up. People can throw together an aquarium of chaos and
disorder, or a blissful environment. 'Scaping is a big part of it IMHO.

Not to mention the sub-conscience tranquility that it stimulates for any
aquarium admirer. Some setup tanks with a sense of pride. Some with a
sense of showmanship..some just because they care.

there is a great deal of satisfaction to be got from seeing that you
have created an environment that allows your fish to breed....that is
great....I remember and still feel the excitement when you spot a new
baby.....
I know you far better than to even believe that money plays a part -
however you may wish to portray yourself....you just get a kick out of
all those ickle, lickle fishies - admit it....store credit is a plus but
not the be all and end all for you or me....all it does is help finance
our addiction :-)

Why are you morphing? You're mirroring your targets. Don't forget your
4:00 methadone treatments, now. And stop scratching the sore below your
nose or it won't heal properly.
And don't pick your nose and keep your elbows off the table when you're

Our water bill is sky high. Not only do I have the fishtanks inside but the
ponds and tanks outside. Water changes are time consuming and my least
favorite activity. I almost liked the "old days" better because we didn't
know about water changes. Geeze, it's a wonder any of our fish survived
over a year back then.

I do enjoy the scenery. There is no place in my home that I lose
sight of at least one of my five tanks, but I also enjoy just having
motion going on. I have a ceiling fan in 3 rooms, one of my computer
monitors real time weather information a presents it as graphs which
constantly change (imagine the excitement of watching the wind
direction and speed change) and then my 2 dogs. I sometimes worry
about the day I can no longer take care of them. Most of all I think
I will miss the activity of something happening.

Nice thing about having young fish that stores really want is that I
don't deal in store credit, I get cash dollars. Generally half of
whatever the dealer's selling price is.

I still use buckets even on the 130g tank.....
Another pleasure of course is going out and buying new fish....I've just

and yep, I relented, and am now the proud owner of 3 black angels....

Ah man....You're killing me...I'm trying to figure out what I can do with
this oscar and get me some black angels too !!! I'm assuming that oscars
and angels don't mix well, I haven't looked that up today. I know the
oscar needs a bigger tank where as the 55 would do ok for a pair of
blacks. And a pair of blacks would be alot cheaper than building a tank
for one oscar. Help me Gill.

I have a Python and use it to drain the 55s out the back door, but it
doesn't reach with the 10s. I wont waste water using the sink
water-pressure to drain them with. That's waste of potable water beyond
reason. I do need to get some kind of adapter to use it to fill the tanks.
The original one was crap and cracked. I ordered another one and that one
also cracked after a few months. I want to see if I can get something made
of brass at Lowe's or Home Depot. Now if I could only remember to take the
hose with me........

I would assume that they wouldn't mix either - both being cichlids - and
I would guess the angels would come off worse....but Hannibal is so cute

weeks.

Now you need three gold ones to go with them. A small group of mixed angels
is a sight to see in a large tank. I've even seen pearlscale angels in that
large Aquarium store in Nashville.

Odd you didn't mention a TV. I don't think I've ever visited anyone who
didn't have a TV playing somewhere in the house. When I'm alone here I
often have the TV on for no other reason than something moving and hearing
human voices. I live out in the country so all I hear are the sounds of
nature and an occasional barking dog.
If you are old or ill you can make plans for your dogs ahead of time at a

I never kept an Oscar but every friend I had had problems keeping anything
with them. I have heard of them not eating a feeder GF for some reason.
They'd just ignore one and allow it to share their tank and eat all the
others. From what I saw they grow into large aggressive fish with great
personalities (except with other fish). Great if you don't mind keeping a
large tank containing only one fish.

I don't use water pressure to drain my tanks, gravity does just fine
through the python clone. The tanks are only a few inches higher than
the sink in the next room, but that's enough to keep the siphon going.
I've read about the outrageous amount of good water that a python
wastes in proportion to the relatively small amount siphoned from the
tanks. My water is expensive, I don't waste it, indoors or out. I use
soaker hoses for all of my gardens, as well. I would be perfectly
happy reducing the frequency of my showers, but Missus Gardener draws
the line at that particular water saving action. Or inaction.

Oscars are not to happy to share their tank with others, i was the one who
would put feeders in and he would always leave one i think for something to
do, but my pacu did the same thing. I would never of considered putting
angels in with him, good chance they would be dipped out with the net in a
few days.
Nik
My four angels are doing well getting used to the new home. (meaning taking
over the tank)

He needs to check out the second hand stores for cheap used tanks. I've
seen them as large as 100g+ here in Nashville. I passed up some good buys
simply because I have no more space - NONE!

Yeah that works on my 55s but not the 10s since they're too far from the
doors and too low for the sinks.

I used it ONE TIME and the wastage was enough to make it the last time!

I don't mention TV because it is rarely on, mostly to catch the
evening news.
One thing about aging with relatively good health, hard to arrange for
a future. Further made difficult living in a small community. "No
kill shelter" may sound reasonable, but we don't even have a humane
society or a funeral parlor. Most of the available services are done
by individuals that may not be around when my need comes up. TV ads
make a bit of a do about financial planning. How do you plan when you
may live another 20 years, but old enough to die tomorrow (feeling
pretty good this morning <g>?
So planning for the fish and dogs is a continual concern. I may not
have a warning from some slow medical death. My dad was getting ready
for work one morning at the age of 52 when he had a thrombosis.
The fish are a very difficult problem. I bought everything via the
Internet. There are a few fish fanciers in town, but often they have
lost interest or don't want more. Besides, I don't think anyone can
care for my fish or dogs as I do, tongue in cheek of course.

This is true. If people quickly check headers they will see all the obscene
messages are from two trolls, one posting from
Earthlink.net and the other, hiding from his elders, a variety of services.

These meaningless attacks bring some kind of relief or satisfaction to these
people that they cannot achieve in normal ways. This is what teaching hate
and intolerance does to people. Mix in lack of education (ignorance) and
feelings of inferiority and there you go. Think how powerless this person
is and feels in real life that he must turn to a place like this to destroy
to gain power. Disrupting all these newsgroups and attacking a *female
senior citizen* makes him feel powerful and manly. But yes, I was advised
to use disclaimers and to defend myself from these unwholesome individuals.

I know what you mean. I'm also getting up in years and our plans go only so
far as moving back to town when this place is too much to take care of.

We never know what tomorrow may bring. I do have a plan for my fish and
whatever pets will be here when my time comes. My stepdaughters will handle
everything if I'm a widow then. They're 100% dependable and trustworthy.
Both are fond of animals and that helps as well.
