View Full Version : Platy algae control
NetMax
May 14th 06, 04:57 PM
I took a 40g out of service and transferred the algae-covered sandstone
rocks to a 70g. In the 40g (under an 18W lamp), the algae grew to the
appearance of a dark green-grey moss resembling a short lawn, which would
sway in the water's current. The 70g has 160W of light, so under this
sudden blast of light, the algae took on a new mission. It's growth
exploded, becoming a fuzzy lawn 3/4" thick and spreading over other
rocks, plants and across the gravel. A couple more weeks and I'd be
worried about it covering the fish ;~). Definitely an infestation out of
control.
Then I got in my Platy order - one dozen large red females (yeah, all
girls, luck of the draw). They have been moving like a herd of cows,
rock by rock, slowly mowing the algae-lawn down. They just pick a rock,
and about 10 at a time will stand vertically, head-down munching away
like they were eating spaghetti (they get a piece, move it down their
throat and then twist their body to pull the algae strand off the stone).
Now my tank is filled with green Platy poop, but at least that, I can
easily gravel-vacuum.

Reading this prompted me to go and look at the tank where I have my
Platys - 3 of them were grazing on some algae - spooky - I've always
assumed that they were just sifting for bits of waste food but you are
right - they do eat it..... :-)

There's always Flourish Excel. Don't forget to add a few otos and plecos
for faster results.

I wish my platys would eat algae. They nibble on it but never enough to mow
it down. Maybe I feed them too much.

Now I know I'm overfeeding mine. Theirs is the only tank getting a good

I have had some that appeared to sex change, as soon as I took a male out,
another changed. Maybe they just developed later as mum was pregnant from
LFS so maybe too young. Since then, no sex changes, fry with colour on at
birth all shows what good care can do My last 10 sunset fry were all girls
and still are at 10 months. Due to space in tank they were born with, they
had a few months with 2 angels, making their tank spotless, working on the
algae straightaway. They have their own tank now, the cleanest of my 5
tanks, plants grow very well as they constantly peck the plants and no algae
gets a chance to grow. They may well be fed a little too much as they are
next to 2 spawning angels who get lunch to keep them conditioned and the
platies want some too, but it doesn't stop them keeping algae at bay. They
are lovely fish to keep, their fry are adorable and I enjoy them as much as
my angels and clown loaches.

In regards to sex-changing, I don't think so. Changes in the appearance
of their external sex characteristics does not reconfigure their internal
sex organs.
While juveniles of many fish can 'hide' their true sex for a while,
adults cannot, and with older fish, females often take on male
characteristics. These Platys in particular are quite large, so several
have the appearance of a male gonopodium extension on their female shaped
oval anal fin, but they are all obviously female, with a large gravid
spot.
With a dozen females, I'm sure they'll drop a few fry (12 x 20 fry x 3
months = over 700 fry), so some will survive to become the next
generation.
Platys are a good choice for a low-maintenance tank imo. They are not
fearful or jittery, keep their population at a reasonable level (less
predatory than Swordtails, less prolific than Guppies), and are easy on
the eyes with their color combinations. An easy favourite.
