View Full Version : Are algae killer chemicals safe enough?
we moved the tank during the winter when there was no sun, and now find
its in a place that gets too
much sun, and now we have green water.
I've scrubbed the walls and changed the water, but too many water
changes clouds the water as the water blooms...
anyone tried the chemicals that kill algae? No other place to move the
tank unfortunately....
fish are ok, but are hard to see at times.

The safest thing to do is shade the window or door to block the excess
light.

I'm sure your GF will only benefit with water changes.

I've never used it because I have live plants in every tank I own.

No, the safest thing yu can do is buy a freaking bnook and not pay
attentin to anyone named Koi-Lo. Pay attention long enough to create a
kill filter, then ignore from there on out. Don;'t filter on address,
just the name....
Koi-Lo is the name to kill file......and your erroneous info and crap
is history.

no.. this isnt the way to handle algae. what you need to do is let the algae grow on
the back and sides. then the single celled algae will be starved for nutrients.
also you have a VERY nice buffer in case the filter shuts down.
fish will be ok if the water is cloudy cause the algae is sucking up the wastes, but
it also means the tank isnt balanced so.....
too many fish too little water
too many fish too little filtration
too much food or too much food at one time or too much waste in the food being fed.
if the food has corn or wheat as first ingredient look for fish or krill in 1st and
2nd place in ingredients list.
stuff more biomedia into the filter
one other problem, a tank in the sun will heat up during the day, cool at night. so
get a heater to prevent too much of a drop. Ingrid

thx for the tips. the tank has been crystal clear all thru the winter
when it was not very sunny here in the Bay Area. It all started when
the sun came out. Have not changed anything else...

water with no nitrates will not support algae growth. check your nitrates and you
might find nitrates pretty high. even pea soup goes clear when shaded. Ingrid
