I have a conk shell in the tank. It swam out when I fed. Soon as it ate it
went right back into the shell. When I was looking I picked that shell up,
apparently the fish was in it but I didnt see it. I cannot see anything
wrong with the fish but it stays in that shell all the time now. Only comes
out to eat. The other one just swims around by him/herself. The fish does
appear to be a little lighter in color than normal. Might there be something
wrong with this loach?

I think my greatest fear would be it getting stuck in the shell. Conk
shells get smaller as you follow the park where it's body was. It's seems
to be a great place to trap a fish. I don't use them in my tanks for that
very reason. It's odd he'd rather be in the shell than hanging out with the
other loach.

Pale color is a sigh of dominance I believe. If he is taken away from
the shell another loach will assume the place. they like to hide,
that's how they are caught in the wild.

Glad you found him :-)

The lighter colour is more than likely what is known as "greying"
out....it can be caused by stress but also will occur when two loaches
spar for dominance (to become the alpha). see www.loaches.com for more
details on Clown Loaches.

How big is the tank? Is it large enough to get some more Clown Loaches -
they do better in larger groups....

I don't think so. I keep 9 clows in my big tank and some like to swim
around all day, while others only come out at night.
