So my tank is still gradually cycling. The ammonia isn't spiking, and
is hovering just over 1 ppm, while the nitrite is about 0.5 ppm and the
nitrate at 20 ppm. I have been continuing with very limited feeding.

The pH of the tank is about 7.7 or 8. Our water is very hard. Since I
don't wish to manipulate the pH, would cichlids be a better fit than the
tetras and rasboras I have currently? Could anyone recommend good fish
for this very hard/alkaline water?

TIA,

Fred

What was your tank size again, Fred? Knowing this would help post some
answers. You probably mentioned the tank before, but I've cleaned postings
up since then.

My water is off the test-stick as far as hardness goes. The African Cichlids
thrived for me. But I also had clown-loaches, plecos, bettas and angelfish
do well.

Just a 10g starter tank, but I plan to expand.

Livebearers, guppies, platties, swordtails would do well in that
water. I'm partial to Endler's Livebearers.

Central American cichlids, but most of them that I know about get
rather large.

Oh, then forget the cichlids. Stick to smaller fish like the livebearers.
As for plants, the hornwart does well in really hard alkaline water and
doesn't need a lot of light and extra fertilizer.

Thank you all for the advice! It is indeed a huge help. Aside from
the-troll-who-shall-remain-nameless, this group has been a huge help to
me as a beginner.

Cheers,

Only seen Endlers at one LFS, a 15 USG long with about 1,000 @ <1/2
inch, all males. An amazing sight to behold.
<http://badmanstropicalfish.com/who/mystery_september_04.jpg> This is
the color morf, red instead of orange with just a touch of purple and
that beautiful emerald green.
I suppose no females, so no one cuts into his supply chain?

The males only trick has been going for quite a while, females are out
there, I've given mixed males and females to a couple shops.
