View Full Version : Mating Rules for Angels
My neighbor told me that angels were monogamus and they mated for
life..that if one died, the other would not find interest in another
mate. Could this be so? Is this common or am I getting my leg pulled here?

I think its a myth. I had a breeding pair and he died so I put another few
angels in and she has happily paired off and bred again.
Perhaps its an individual fish thing.

I didn't find that to be true. They would chose another mate, probably when
they were sure the one they had was gone for good. I can't recall how long
it took though. I love angelfish and had them for many years.

Hey there Ed. = )

Angels form pairs. Usually these can be kept prertty solid if the pair
works well together and both stay healthy.
During this pair bonding, they will occasionlly test each other to see
whether or not they are still worthy to be their partner.
When you see a pair lip locking or battling it out and then the next
day they're spawning, that's what I mean by testing each other.
If a mate is found to be unworthy (sick, old, uninterested in spawning,
etc.,) it will be run off and a new mate will be found.
Now most breeders are going to take a bonded pair and place them in a
separate tank, so you're not going to see this behavior as often.
Many pairs spawn and their eggs are removed by the breeder.
The pair is prompted to spawn again soon.
I tend to think this keeps a pair together longer than they would if
they had other choices of mates passing by.
There's occasionally "three-somes", which consist usually of 2 females
and one male.
You can also see occasionally 2 females "spawning", or rather going
through the ritual of both laying eggs.
I've seen both, and have had a pair of female lay eggs togethers when
no worthy males (In their opinions, not mine!!! hehe), were available.
I have also had some that lost a mate, either illness, age, whatever,
but while they were together and not really take to other mates well.
They would spawn with another fish later on, but there wasn't really
that pair bond there.
So basically, somebody's pulling your fin. = )~
