View Full Version : Help! Disappearing Fish!

Help! I have a small 5 gallon tank with a couple of goldfish. I had
to give one away because he got too big for the tank. I thought the
remaining fish (Lola) would be lonely so I bought a new fish and the
next day, it was gone! No body, no nothing. So, I bought another new
one. 2 days later... gone! Vanished! SO, I bought another new one
yesterday, he was present for breakfast but this evening... completely
gone. The tank has a lid so I know they didn't jump out. What's going
on??? I check the filter every time and nobody was in there. There
are a few fake plants and a couple of rocks in the tank. I took
everything out during each incident and still nothing! Is Lola eating
all of the new guys? Is that possible? Thanks!
Lisa
if she is significantly bigger than the new ones, yes.
or, they could be dying and et. BTW, your 5 gallon isnt big enough for even 1 GF.

Do yourself a favor as well as the fish..Return gold fish to lfs or
give to someone with a larger tank or outside pond, or buy a large
tank.
If you get rid of the goldfish and stillwant fish, get some small
tropicals which are more suited to small tank habitats such as yur 5
gal is. Goldfish of any type are just too fast a growing fish and grow
to large for such a small tank......even just one single GF is too
much for that sized tank...........A 5 gal would make a nice betta
tank or get a few fish in the tetra family or some red clouds. They
all do fine in a small tank.

What kind of new fish did you buy? Was it another goldfish or a small tetra
type? Many GF will eat other fish if they're small enough and easy to
catch. A 5g tank is too small for even one GF. You really need a larger
tank for Lola.

If they're small enough - yes!

Thank you all for your posts! I did not know that my tank was too
small. It was a gift to my children from friends at Christmas and I
have grown quite attached to Miss Lola. Like I said, I knew Alexander
(my other goldfish) was too big and gave home to my sister in law for
her big tank. I will go out today for a larger tank and get some small
guys for the little tank. Wasn't there a time that goldfish were just
in small bowls?!?! How misleading the pet stores are!
Thank you all again!
Lisa
Yep and they used to have them as prizes at fairs etc, but
organizatins have put the law down on them and in most if not all
places its against the law. In Rome its against the law to put them in
a gold fish bowl and IIRC its illegal to sell gold fish bowls anymore.
Just because small bowls are sold does not make it the proper way to
keep them. Just look at poor Bettas and how they are kept......

Yes, and most of these fish lived short miserable lives stewing in ammonia
and suffocating to death. The person may have done 100% water changes daily
at best, as the fish gasped at the surface for oxygen and died anyway.
