Apologies if this question has been asked previously, I am new to this
group! I have two tanks with mollies, platy's and swordtails. The fish have
produced several young, mostly the mollies but recently the platy's too. I
would like to know if you can tell when the female is ready to have the
young so that I can isolate her and prevent having to catch the young after.

The area around their vent turns dark and shortly before they give birth
most will isolate themselves from the other fish. If there are plants in
the tank most will hide there to give birth. Isolating the mother-to-be in
a separate tank can be very stressful for her. It's better to leave her in
her home tank and remove the fry.

Make notes with dates. After awhile you'll be able to tell just by looking
that it's about 4 weeks time, and they get really fat with a dark gravid
spot on the bottom. Platy's and Swordtails are notorious baby eaters.
Mollies can co-exist with babies. Keep in mind that sword babies will attack
and kill each other off as the older/bigger ones bully the rest.

If You have a lot of plants like Java moss and Hornwart, many if not most
baby platys will survive.
