View Full Version : Trouble with heater

Hi, all!

I'm new to tropical fish - only had goldfish before.

I bought a heater and it's just a cheapie. I'm having big trouble getting it
set to the right temp! Very frustrating when you don't have hour after hour
to check it and adjust accordingly.

Is there any other type of heater where you can just set it to the degrees
you want & go? This one just has notches...

Poor fish woke up in an 85 degree tank this morning! I felt awful:( I
turned it down 2 notches and left for work this morning - now they're
probably freezing. You see my problem?? Any solutions out there other than
patience, probably killing them, and lots of time?

Thanks for any guidance...

Mary

Best way of setting a heater is to have a thermometer first... Make your
tank, by either heating and adding warm water to get desired temp, insert
heater, unplugged. let sit, turn the temp guage down to it's lowest setting
per instructions, plug in, and turn UP until light comes on. Leave and
monitor for a bit... If light goes out almost immediately, it's close, knock
it up another bit and check temp in an hour.

You'll figure it out, its a matter of time.. All things take time.

If you can affford it order an ebo-jager heater online. You can get them
for less than $20 online(although they run about 40 at the local fish
store). They have a dial with the temperature marked, and I've found
mine to be accurate within a degree or two of the stated temp. I set it
when I got it, and that was it. As for you finding your tank at 85 this
morning, I wouldn't worry too much. I've been running my tank at 85 for
over a week now to help get rid of ich. BTW what kind of fishes do you
have?

I'm SO impatient;) That's what the fish are for - to soothe me and slow me
down. Thanks!

Hi, Josh

That heater sounds great - do you have any links?

I've got 2 orange gouramis, 2 black neons, 3 african drawf frogs and one
bottom-feeder cat that's smaller than a pleco and lighter colored but I
don't know what kind he is exactly:( I have to look him up sometime soon!

Thanks for the help

IIRC, both the Ebo-Jagers and the Visitherms (and probably others...I'm not a
real heater guru) have marked thermostats. The latest Visitherm I bought has a
*real* easy to see and adjust thermostat.

www.thatfishplace.com has good prices, if you don't want to try to hunt these up
at your LFS.

BTW, as a follow-up...I think you may have too big of a heater for your tank --
that big of a jump overnight would make me a bit nervous. Someday your heater
is going to stick in the "on" position, and too big of a heater will cook the
tank before you have a chance to notice the problem. 3W/gallon is usually
enough, unless you have a very cold room (I've seen folks go as high as
5W/gallon, but that would make me nervous unless it was a dual-heater setup).

I just bought the Ebo-Jager from the link you provided. I picked the 50 w -
that's all I need:)

Thanks so much!

Cool - That's a great site! I registered & now I know that it's a Corydora,
but can't quite figure out which one:) Next time I go to that LFS, I'll
check the tank for a positive ID.
