View Full Version : African dwarf frog becoming white?
I noticed today that 1 of my AFD's is expericing a sudden pigment loss, in a
very Michael-Jacksonesque manner.
I feed them, alternately, frozen bloodworms and live blackworms. Tank Temp
is 24 degrees. They cohabit with a Pleco, and a Khuli Loach. Water is
changed 1/3 every 4 weeks. Generally, things are stable.
Any idea what is going on?

I have 5 ADF's and have seen the same thing. On one occasion one of
the ADF's started floating on the top of the tank and I thought he was
a goner. I took him out and put him in a small fish bowl with a about
3 inches of water and placed it on a white counter in a white room in
a warm area of the house. A day later he got over whatever ailed him
but was almost completely white. It was a bit of a shock. I thought
that perhaps he changed colour as he was surrounded by white. I put
him back in with the others and although he darkened up a bit, he is
still much lighter than his fellows. That was two months ago, and he
seems fine. Did you perhaps put your frog somewhere where the
background would be quite light?

On a similar topic, I have a customer looking for an albino African dwarf
frog (not an African clawed frog), but I can't locate one. Anyone know
if they even exist?

I've NEVER seen an albino ADF--and given my son's
love of the freakish and albino, I'm sure he would have
pointed it out to me.

If by "it" you mean molt, yep ADF's sure do. It is more noticable
when they are younger as they are growing so quickly. You might just
notice that they are looking a little scruffy or see something odd in
the water. Usually ADF's are quick to eat their sluffed off skins,
however, so you might not see much. When the skins molt, the frog may
be a bit lighter. But in my example above, my frog looked albino!

They sure do.
Mine will take their front foot..peal it off and scoop it right into their
mouth.
It's kind of nasty, but neat all at once.

Well...I've never seen them readily available, as are the albino Clawed Frogs.
However, albinism can happen in every living creature. Some are very rarely
seen albino though....some are quite common.
I don't understand that, maybe somebody can help me to undertsand why.
Take for instance, Albino Cories, albino rabbits...both VERY commonly seen.
However, how many albino dogs or cats have you seen?
I've seen only a couple albino dogs...no cats.
I've seen an albino Squirrel in a book..but never in the flesh.
I once saw an ablino Earwig....that was really ugly, let me tell ya!
They're ugly enough as it is. = )~
