View Full Version : Oxy-Clean around fish

Sorry if someone has asked this question before, but I couldn't find one in
this group.

Anyways, the plexiglass part of my full hood on my tank is constantly being
covered with transluscent films from the water that condeses on the glass
then evaporates leaving...stuff. The films don't completely block out the
light, but it does reduce light intensity very slightly. When I do my
semi-weekly water change, I try to clean it off by wiping it with a wet
paper towel, but that doesn't completely remove it if at all. I dare not
use any type of window cleaner because I don't want my fish to die if I
don't completely rinse it off. Today, I thought that oxy-clean might be a
way to clean it off without endagering the fish. This is only a
supposition on my part. So, has anybody here used oxy-clean around their
fish, and have you noticed any adverse effects if you have? Also, does
anyone know about the general toxicity of oxy-clean? Any input I would
much appreciate.

Try using Vinigar & water... Safe for the fish & will get off calcium
stains.

I don't trust any chemical cleaning product on anything that comes in
contact with fish or thier water. Bleach solutions or Vinigar & water
will clean any aquarium componant I can think of.

However, read this:
http://alsnetbiz.com/homeimprovement/oxybleach.html (regarding the
active ingredient in oxi-clean)
Seems it's little different than bleach, leaving no residue.

I still wouldn't risk it, YMMV.

The website seems to suggest that it is non-toxic (pure sodium
percarbonate anyway, not oxy-clean necessarily) and safe around areas
that come in contact with human food. But, sice both of you have
suggested a good alternative, I won't try Oxy-clean unless someone else
testifies that it won't kill fish. For instance, I drink cola, but I
wouldn't let my fish swim in it :o).

Thanks a lot!
