View Full Version : Kribs had babies, now what?

My 10g, had a male and female krib with 3 kuhli loaches and a bristlenose in
it... All is fine, and a couple days ago, the female started ramming the
male all over the place... I never understood why... but now I see that they
have babies, freeswimming and eating, I fed them shrimp pellets and crushed
flake along with some sinking cichlid pellets from Tetra, that everyone
seems to enjoy....
So... what now? Do they get seperated, do I wait until the parents start
chasing them off, what's the time frame like?
Yes NetMax, I'll be searching for your last most EXCELLENT post to keep a
copy of it... didnt' know if theres anything more to it or not....
Thanks.

I'll write 100 posts in a month (checking... March was 145 posts), so I
not sure which one you are alluding to. I hope I haven't done anything
bad ;~)
For the Kribs, the fry have no real predators (except the parents) so I'd
leave them in there to see how it goes, (or remove the parents if you
really wanted to). Your biggest worry is to make sure the little mouths
are fed properly.
On your BBA tribulations (1g of bleach? *whew*, and MTS survivors??), why
fishless cycle? You have enough other filters running that you can
migrate a mature filter or some used filter media over to the 'new' tank.
Fishless cycling is really only neccesary for the first tank in a house,
unless your'e talking about the few days it takes to re-balance.
Anecdote warning.
I set up an indoor 250g Koi pond, and installed a few mature canisters, a
pond trickle filter, UV and a 2 stage underwater pre-filter (I like to
overfilter for Koi ;~). I was getting ammonia readings *grumble*, so
water changes, Ammo-lock and I wrung some large sponge filters into the
trickle filter. I think the canister filters might have been off too
long, or they were nuked by chloramines, but the seeded bacteria I put
into the trickle filter should establish in a few days.
After 2-3 weeks I was STILL getting ammonia readings and no nitrite!!
*ponder ponder*, more water changes more Ammo-lock, and then the lights
came on. Do you see the problem?
Seeded bacteria floats around for a while until it settles into the
filter media, but a UV filter doesn't differenciate between good and bad
bacteria, so I was nuking my nitrifying bacteria almost as fast as it was
multiplying. To make it worse, since the trickle is a gravity return,
the UV is installed before it. Doah, my bad.
The snow has melted off the bikes (XR100 and XS1100S) and the insurance
is paid for :o), just need nice weather. I miss my Yoshimura CB550F, but
what I think I would really like to have now is an old R65 (BMW). I must
be mellowing out ;~)

No, great advice, great info as usual....

That's what I'll be watching in the next few days... I think they'll be ok,
just curious...

DOH!~!~! I forgot.. I do have an 20-40 filter that's been running on a 10g,
might re-introduce that one for awhile....

Beemers are the way to go for long hauls.... and some are sporty enough to
bring the kid back out in ya... I'm over the crotch rockets, although, my
streetfighter is based on a CBR600, but in my older days, I'll probably be
selling it for a 'slower' bike, yeah right....
Isn't an XS1100 a Midnight Special?? based on the virago isn't it? Nice
bike... good weather is coming, mother nature said so... :-)

Yes, Midnight Special , but not based on the Virago. The XS is a 4
cyclinder DOHC behemoth. I think it evolved out of their DOHC triple
750. It has more power than I can use (94hp?) and is way too heavy to
be anything more than a highway torpedo.
I think my CB550F (4 cyl SOHC) was similar to your CBR600 (DOHC?).
Ported & polished to 553 with a 3/4 race cam and lots of other goodies.
Of all the bikes I've had (several), I think I miss that one the most.
It had the nicest power/weight ratio in a size you could throw around
while shaving footpegs ;~).

Ok, now I know what you speak of... that was in the same class as the
Kawasaki Eliminators... That was what I wanted when I grew up... 900
Eliminator.... power cruiser... and an XS was in excess, it had more power
than most anyother bike except the V4s of Honda, Magna, Sabre....

now you've gone and done it... I'm ruined for the rest of the day, you've
got me over here dreamin' about scraping around some of these tennessee
mountains... we've got a place, called the Dragon... it's got a 'dragon's
tail' and a dragon's tale... the story goes, if you can tame the dragon,
without the dragon coming out and biting you, you'll live to see another
day... if the dragon bites you, better call a friend...

318 curves, in 13 miles... that's fun....

Sweet :o) Into my list of saved maps for my next trip to NC. Thanks!
The closest we had then was Ile Bizard, an island off of Montreal which
had carved into its perimeter, about 12 miles of road which challenged
you to keep to a steady 60mph (and only one stop sign at the bridge's
intersection). A nice mix of straights, corners and elevation changes to
leave your stomach behind.
