I have just set up my first aquarium (a 16 gallon tank) and am using a
pair of Longfin Zebra Danios to cycle the tank.

Eventually, I'd like to get some more of the Danios, some glass fish
(not painted) and some ghost shrimp. Are these fish compatible with
each other? If so, how many of each are recommended? I was thinking
4-6 of the Danios, 2 of the glass fish, and maybe 3 or 4 of the shrimp,
but I'm not sure if this will overload the tank.

Thanks.

Hello I dont know about the shrimp. I have a little chart that sez the
danios and glass fish are not compatible. I dont really know why except
the danios are a very busy little fish and perhaps they would stress the
peaceful glass fish. The danios also prefer a lower pH than the glass fish
but I have had them at around 7.5 for quite a while with no problems. I
would think it is worth a try.

As far as load this strikes me as a very low load. The general rule of
thumb is one inch per gallon. But the smaller the fish the more you could
fudge on that number. I have had 4 neons, 3 gold skirts, a blue dwarf
gourami, and 3 lemon tetras in a 15 gallon for going on two years with no
problem. I don't even maintain it as well as I should. The bigger the fish
and the more stress there is in a tank the fewer the fish. If you do go
with the danios/glass I would suggest 3 or more just so they feel a bit more
secure with the danios zipping around. JMO

The danios and glass fish are compatible in that they probably will not
bother each other, however the glass fish are really brackish. If you
slowly acclimatize the glass fish to fresh water you may have luck keeping
them, but be sure to keep your water exceptionally clean.

Brackish fish kept in fresh water are generally more susceptible to
bacterial infection, and glass fish in general don't do well in old or
dirty water.

The danios like moving about quite a bit while the glass fish, at least the
one I have, tends to be rather docile preferring to move around in the
plants.
You could bump the shrimp up to a dozen as they are rather small and may not
be all that sturdy of a beast. I bought about a dozen for a 15gal high,
lost 7 of them; bought 10 more and ended up with an even dozen - before they
started breeding. Another thing on the shrimp would be to provide them with
several hiding places - small ledges under slabs of rock. For me, they are
the more intersting of my fish.
