View Full Version : PHOTO OF THE WEEK, Duckweed

We had been so plagued with duckweed on our small pond that we just
declared the war over and lost interest in the pond. By late Spring, it
was a sea of green and might as well have been filled with cement. Other
than frogs, we could see nothing in the way of life in the pond.

If you tire of trying to net it out and it's the smooth leaf shiny duckweed,
koi and GF will remove it themselves. They consider it the best salad ever.
If you also garden it can be composted or used as a mulch. If it's the
rough, frilly edged duckweed the koi and GF will not touch it. I suggest
you call your county Ag agent as ask what the safest way to remove it would
be. I say this because many websites are just pushing a product to make $$$
with no thought of anything else.

Now you're playing in my pond. Like you were told in rec.gardens, use koi or
goldfish, they eat duckweed with much gusto. With the caveat that koi also
like to rummage at the bottom of the pond in search of aquatic insects to
feed on, so they can make the pond muddy.

There are herbicides that can be used to control duckweed, some have a
relatively low residual.
http://www.interstateproducts.com/pdf/Non%20selective_eliminator.pdf
For example has a relatively minor residual, but is toxic to aquatic
insects. So it could disrupt the pond's ecosystem.

I am more concerned about tadpole survival as this is primarily a frog pond.

In addition to all the potential problems with chemicals is the absurd
cost of that stuff. As near as I can tell, it would cost about $300 for
enough to do my 40 ft pond and then not a sure thing.

I am on my way to get some gold fish and netting is kinda fun anyway.
