View Full Version : Eheim filter mystery

I went to clean my Topical tank last week and I could not feel any output
from my Eheim Professional II. I checked the filter and the cleaning guage
was fine, but the pump was cavitating. I started changing some water and
sure enough there was no output from the filter. (Output is normally under
water).

So I cleaned the filter and reconnected it, but it would not siphon. I
pushed the big magic button, but it still would not prime. The button was
very stiff at first. I tried filling the priming holes manually a few times,
but still no luck. I could here the water dribbling into the filter, but it
was not the usual rush of water you get when pushing the prime button. I
checked the impeller and it seems fine.

I left the damn thing til this week, I assumed I had a blockage in the UV
filter somewhere. It's a good thing I didn't disconnect my trusty AquaClear
500 as I had planned. I just took the UV filter apart and it looks very
clean, just a little sludge on the quartz sleeve. Man, what a stink though,
enough to kill a small child.

So it won't prime, no blockages, impeller is fine, it must be an air leak?
Weird that it happened spontaneously? I sort of suspect the gasket around
the priming button. Any other thoughts?

Yea, beginners should not fool with items listed for professionals.
Evidently its too complicated for you to comprehend.

My first guess would be the hoses. It sounds a lot like a blockage. If
you disconnect the return hose from the pump head does the siphon still run
slow when you prime it? That should narrow things down a little. Try
passing one of those snake brushes through the hoses and the filter.

That was my first thought, but they seem to be clear.

I did notice that the cleaning indicator seems to have a bit of crap stuck
in it. According to the manual it comes apart for cleaning, but they aren't
big on instructions. I'll have to investigate it tomorrow.

Hi..

Hmm.., might an air bubble hamper the passage?

Did you try to turn the filter pot around while the pump is
running (pump downwards, pot upwards)? I used to "shake" my
elder eheims cautiously as long as air bubble inhibited the
filter flow.

Either air or a Blockage in the hoses.
