View Full Version : Problem: Tank emptied -- what water depth do fish need?
Hello,
I hope someone can help.
I woke up this morning to find my 150 litre tank with about 10cm depth
of water in it.
After tracing the problem, I have now filled it half-full and got the
filter and heater going again.
Should I go ahead and fill it right to the top? I'm concerned that this
would be too much new water in one go.
I have 22 small fish in there (ie, guppies, platties, tetras).
Thanks for reading and any help offered.

You can probably go ahead and fill it up without worry. If you want to
play it safe test the pH and GH of your tank and your water source.
Major sudden changes in GH can be dangerous to fish, but chances are if
your source of water is the same there will be little difference in
hardness. Drops in hardness are more dangerous than rises.
Sudden extreme changes in pH can be stressful to fish, but the shifts need
to be quite dramatic to be worth worrying about. Again, large drops are
more dangerous than large increases in pH. City water typically comes out
of the tap at a high pH, so you probably don't need to worry about that
either.
If you don't want to test your water you may try filling the tank up a
little at a time over the course of a couple hours, observing your fish
after each top-up, but I strongly suspect you will be fine to fill it up
completely straight away. Just make sure the temperature is roughly the
same.

I would add it in a few steps..Why chance it but odds are it would

Many thanks for your advice.
So far, so good. I'm adding the water gradually (the tank is still
half-full), and on waking this morning, the fish are all still there.
(Yesterday when I woke up, the fish were swimming in about 10cm of
water.)
Fingers crossed for the future!
