Hi All,

I have a tiger barb that is not doing so good. His gill on one side was
flipped up (dunno how it happened) so you can see the red underneath.
He was like that for a long time and seemed to be fine but 2 weeks ago
he started hiding a lot (esp after water changes) I would see him
coming out occasionally and last week one of the other tigerbarbs ran
into him and he was floating around upside down for a bit. But he
flipped himself back and is still alive (which surprised me)

Oh yea just before is started hiding the gill area was all white...but
it is now red again

Anyway I just noticed that his gill is flipped up even more and his
gill on the other side is puffing up a bit so i think he is getting
worse. Does any one know what kinda disease this might be and how it
might fix it?I've also noticed that his fins seem to be deterioting.

My fish are in 14g tank total of 6 tiger barbs and 1 crayfish. All my
ammonia is 0, nitrite 0 nirtate around 5-10, ph 7.4. Planted.

Cheers!

How are the other fish?

How much water do you change?
How often do you change water?

I don't have Tiger Barbs, but I have had fish with Float Bladder
infections. I have one white cloud that floated from bottom to top
for months, then recovered.

I don't like to treat whole tanks unless the problem is wide spread,
otherwise I make sure I do my regular 20% twice weekly water changes.
I am a firm believer in water changes.

I was doing 20% changes twice a week but have cut back to once a week
since the tiger barb doesn't seem to like the water change - hides for
a few days afterwards (i do make sure the water temp matches and add
the water back slowly) All the other fish are fine

You are great! Fewer water changes because one fish doesn't like it.
I am almost as bad, but I have religion when it ccmes to water
changes.

I have 2 Clown Loaches that live in a ceramic "Mill House." It gets
covered with alagae so I pull it out to clean the green. My Clowns
hide for days after I do this. I admit, I clean it fewer times than I
would do if not for their silent protest.

This is not a disease. His gill cover has been damaged. This sounds a lot
like an injury due to an assault, no doubt due to the other tiger barb you
have observed "running into it". Aggressive fish instinctively know where
the sweet spots are; the gills are an extremely vulnerable spot in which to
attack another fish. The fact that he has been visibly injured will make
it more likely that he will continue to be attacked.

With aggressive fish like tiger barbs a hierarchy amongst the school often
develops. It is not unusual for the weaker fish to be attacked. Observing
injury and losses in a 14 gallon tank should not be overly surprising.

Try to provide your barbs with as much plant cover as possible so they may
escape attack more easily. If the problem continues your only solution to
keeping tiger barbs in a 14 gallon may be to overstock them--it's not a
great solution, as crowding taxes your filter system and leads to more
aggression, but the chances of one fish being continually singled out
decreases.
