View Full Version : is this algae?

Hi.

I noticed yesterday that attached to two of my plants (a plastic one and a
live one) is a single long strand (3-4cm) of something green with little
spikey leaves on it. It kind of looks like a miniature version of the
pine garland you see for sale at Christmas time. I checked out the
website recommended the other day for identifying algae, and it doesn't
look like any of those.

Is it possible that these are simply strands of some other plant that was
tangled with the live plants I bought?

Or, is it algae, and should I leave it or pull it out?

Right now, the only algae eater I have is a single oto. I had two, but
one died. I've been trying to buy more, but my LFS (and even Petco) don't
have any right now, so I'm anxiously awaiting a new shipment of otos. The
one oto I do have doesn't seem to pay too much attention to the algae in
my tank. I have been adding algae wafers to make sure he gets some food,
and he does seem to be in good shape.

Doesn't sound like any algae I've ever heard of. Maybe hornwort? No real
reason to pull it out unless it just seems too prolific for your tastes.

Seeing the vegetation that appears can be part of the fun. I've got a
customer who can tell me the Latin name of all his plants and when they
were planted, but when I asked him what kind of fish he has, he stammered
"uhh, some blue ones and some red ones" ;~)
