My female Black Molly went into a small shell yesterday and hasnt moved
since (Unless she came out last night), I can see her in the shell, not
moving at all. I have an orange molly that goes in and out of the shell and
we watched today as the orange went over and nudged the shell two or three
times like it was trying to get her to come out. Whats going on here? Should
I pick up the shell and shake her out?

She may have died in the shell. I would see if she's still alive at least.

My dog likes to get under my desk. I have a Clown Loach that likes to
stay in a "Mill House" ornament. I stay in my house most of the week.

Do you have any reason to think the Molly is doing anything dangerous
or do you expect her to be on display all the time?

Orange may be envious?

Fish are no easier to figure out than people. I don't like the Clown
Loach being out of sight. I paid good money to see it!

If you are really worried, shake her out, otherwise you could try
cutting back on feedings, perhaps skip a day. My Clown responds to
the food cut back.

Aren't fish fun?

Jeff, what happened? Did you shake her out? Did she come out on her
own. Is the Orange Molly still shaking the shell? Is the Black Molly
OK?

Please let us know the outcome!

How big is that tank and how strong is the filter flow?

Is the "Orange" possibly a male Molly..?

Got up this morning and she was still in the shell, deceased. Pulled her
out. Perfectly healthy fish, I am under the impression she swam in and got
stuck and was in there for a few days. Funny how that other fish seemed to
be trying to nudge the shell to get her out.

Too bad. She may have gone in the shelter to rest because she was
already feeling sick. Your first thought of getting her out of the
shell may not have saved her, but then.....

Sorry for your loss.

Your molly was probably dead soon after it got itself stuck. You may have
saved it if you had acted quickly, but chances are if the molly was too
weak to free itself from a snail shell it was probably not long for this
world anyway.

When most fish wedge and trap themselves into an object they are usually
highly stressed and looking for an escape. If you do not act to free them
they will likely die in short order through asphyxiation, exhaustion, or
some other stress related factor. One of a few exceptions are catfish,
which will severely wedge themselves into crevices intentionally, and will
confound any manual attempt to remove them--best to leave these fish where
they are, as they know how to get themselves out of the tightest spaces.

I strongly doubt your other fish were nudging the shell in a desperate
empathetic attempt to free the dead fish. Mollies and just about any other
fish will eat their dead decaying kin (or even stressed living kin). It is
more likely your fish were biting at the shell out of curiosity towards the
tasty meat-smelling object.
