Snail for a fry tank

I have 3 Platy fry in a bare bottomed 2 1/2 gallon tank with a sponge
filter. I read that snails can be put in a fry tank to clean up the
uneaten food. I have an apple snail a little bigger than a quarter,
can I add her? I am weighing between the uneaten food being eaten as
opposed to the added waste that the snail will add to the tank. I do
a 50% water change e/o/d.

On a similiar note, can anyone give me their experiences with Platies?
I have never had them, done much reading but they honestly sound kind
of boring, without too much personality. I'd appreciate anyone's
experiences with them.

I used a group of them to cycle my tank and really didn't expect much. They
don't have a lot of unusual behavior, but if you have a mixed group (M/F) I
imagine you'll get the usual breeding/posturing/chasing and such. I really
love mine.

As far as no personality, maybe mine didn't read the same book. ;) Before I
messed with the tank pecking-order (added new fish) they were always doing
something. The males had their favorite female to guard and protect, the
odd-one-out changed every now and again, and sometimes the pregnant ladies
would pick their favorite spot and defend it with the evil eye to all of her
would-be suitors.(One of my ladies decided that a broccoli florette was hers
and guarded it like mad even though she never ate it.)

Another note, mine investigated everything in the tank. I've yet to see fry,
but we've been through at least two pregnancies.

From what I've seen and read, platys are constantly either searching for food
or trying to breed. Sounds pretty dull, but as far as a run-of-the mill type
of fish goes, I'd definately buy these guys again. They learned when their
food was due and where to go to get it, nibbled hands in the tank during
cleaning and followed a finger across the glass.

All in all, a cheery hardy little fish.

Hello Jessica and thank you for your insights! Your Platies sound
delightful and I hope mine have as much personality. As small as they
are they do have a pecking order already, and of course, my favorite
is the smallest who tries to hold her own with the other two. It's
exciting watching them grow and I cannot wait to add them to my
community tank!
