My son has a five gallon talk with two adult mollies. The mollies are
about one inch long. He won a goldfish at the carnival and would like
to add it to the tank. The goldfish is huge, at least two inches long
and much "thicker".

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brad

A couple.

1: Goldies can get a little overpowering, and mollies are quite
docile.
2: Mollies actually prefer brackish water, but can adapt somewhat to
fresh or salt.
3: Goldfish are, while great fish to own, filthy creatures. That tank
is going to get nasty fast without some seroius filtration.
4: A 5 gallon tank is too small for a large goldie, let alone a large
goldie and two mollies.

In short, bad idea.

Mollies & Goldfish could share similar enough water parameters, fresh,
hard with some salt, though the Mollies would like it warmer than the
Goldfish. At 1" your Mollies are not adults, and if they were adults,
they might even torment the Goldfish for a while. I agree with Billy.
The tank is too small. The goldfish alone is probably triple the bio-load
of the Mollies, so your waste production just went up 400%. Goldfish are
swimming food processors and they try to put everything in their mouth
(including Mollies if they almost fit), so the minimal filtered tank size
recommended is about 10g (per Goldfish).
