View Full Version : Where do people talk about cichlids now?
Is there a forum/site that gets a lot of activity? Thanx.

No. People like me don't like web forums, they are too much like hard
work.
This usenet group was very busy once. We could try to get it moving
again.
After nearly 40 years of Cichlid keeping (mainly rift lake) I think I
know a bit about them. I once had 50 tanks and was breeding hundreds
of Cichlids. I now have just one tank of Tanganyika Cichlids.

I've been keeping mbuna for six years. I started with a tank of
cynotilapia afra and yellow labs. I now have ............... a single
tank with cynotilapia afra and yellow labs. Some the originals, and
some the descendents of the originals. Not a very exciting cichlid
keeping history.

While I haven't bothered to learn the correct names for them, I have been
keeping them for about two years, and am rapidly running out of tanks for
their offspring. I have Yellow Labs, Red Zebra's, Electric Blues, Marmalades
and Lemon Jakes. I also just picked up some small hongi fry as well as some
demasoni fry. Just to make things really interesting, my 72 gallon bowfront
started leaking ( I think around a bottom seam but not sure) Wednesday
night. So I have a lot of fish some pretty big for Malawi cichlids in some
very small tanks right now.

Hey,
I post at http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/index.php and it gets a
good deal of traffic, plus the people there are actually helpful in
most cases. Though we do tend to bicker over things like tank size.
Give it a try I am sure you will love it. There is even a java based
chat room where you can talk live with other forum members.
My user name on the forum is almo. I have been keeping fish for almost
17 years. I currently have an new world SA tank, and my African Malawi
Pseudotropheus show tank.
Hope this helps.

We do a bit of activity at our site. www.fishaholics.org
We don't get nearly the volume of places like cichlidae.com or
cichlid-forum.com, but we like to think we're more personable. ;-)
We also have a chat room, Paul (from Cichlid-Forum) and I worked on
together, and typically if you hang out in it for a while, it'll fill up
with fun people looking to chat about fish.
This news group used to be quite busy with 20 - 50 posts a day a few years
back. Now I check it once a week or so and it usually only has a few new
posts.
There are also specialty sites like cyphotilapia.com or duboisi.com amongst
others that are pretty good.

When you think about it, how many folks that keep fish have cichlids? How
many different types are there to discuss.... thousands? How many of those
are computer NG literate? My guess is that only a few percent of computer
owners even know that usenet exists. Of those how many consider themselves
knowledgable enough to want to dispense info? In general 90% of usenet
readers are lurkers and never post. Of course this is all my own opinion,
but you can see why the activity level here is what it is, and something
like alt.sex has zillions of posts a day.

Okay,
Give me your ideas about repairing my 72 gallon bowfront. I have stripped
the bottom and 1/4 of the sides twice now, and the first time it held for
about 2 months, this time it held for almost 6. I can't spot the location of
the leak, but it is literally pouring. I am using the same GE 1200 that
Oceanic uses on these size and bigger tanks. The only thing I can think of
is that I am not supporting the bottom of the aquarium with anything. Its on
a flat full wooden surface, but nothing is under the glass its self. Full of
water/Rock etc, its probably looking at 600 pounds or more.
Any ideas ?

The silicone is flexing the pieces of glass apart under the weight and
uneven surface. To do it properly, you need to take it apart. Clamp the
glass together, and then keep it on a perfectly flat surface. Alot of work,
but there's no quick fix that will work.

Silicone shall seal (up) and carry the load. Hard to say
what kind of problem yours is..

Hi all.
I too used to frequent this group a ton, under the name mid_south
cichlids. Maybe we can kick this group back off with some african chat,
as no question cichlids are the the best and finest of the fresh water
collections. After 13 years in the cichlid hobby and business, I have
sadly been "out of the game" for about 4 years now, sold all my fish. I
once had 17 tanks set up, was selling frontosa and trop. moori and
duboisi like mad, but got caught up in other "life" things as many of us
do, and interest dropped off. "However", the hobby interest always
finds me in hiding every time I get burned out. I've fired up my 55
long, got it "rocked" and loaded. in a week or two, I'm going to likely
start off with filling it with Frontosa and other Tangs. Don't know if
I'll start out juvenile, or purchase some a tad bigger. I'm also
thinking about setting up a 45 (tall) and fill it with some Malawians
and maybe some Victorians. I like the moori's (blue dolphin) and the
Hap. compressiceps, maybe I'll start there. In any event, good to be
back in the hobby, and I'd love to hear what types of cichlids you all
are keeping at the moment, what types of new filters are out there,
though I'm running a wet/dry which I'm sure is still the best way to go.
Is there any new species that I may have missed out on, and can they be
purchased? And any other interesting conversation on the topic.

Hey I post.
But then going off some of the posts out there.....
humanity may be doomed once I am gone and no longer able to hold her hand.
heh heh
but seriously sometimes the general public can inspire that feeling.
Usenet is handy though, more infomation tangled in it's jumbled webs than
almost anywhere.
Just not much new stuff about fish
twas trolls and petty in-fghting dat killed the aquaria groups it was
:-)
