i'm so pleased to find this site , i have my first serious tank that i purchased last year at a thrift shop ...20.00 for a bow front 46 gallon (strange number huh ) it's really awesome , we bought 6 cichlids (african) very tiny ...now a year later they are really huge ...my husband and i really enjoy them .a few mths ago i set up a 10 gallon as one of my fish was being bullied ...anyway the fish that was being mean died so we did a complete change and the 10 gallon was a lifesaver ....so i decided to put something in the 10....i found a sunset platy at walmart alone in a tank so i bought it ...well i guess you know whats next ....yep ...babies , i think the mom has eaten quite a few but i have live plants and lots of hiding places and i still have 5 (for now ) they were born some time yesterday ....what i want to know is how long do they take to give birth , mom is still pretty darn fat but i haven't seen any newbies ...can this go on for days ? and is this normal ?
i'd appreciate any input on this
btw....i set up another tank for mom till the babies get bigger, a 5 gallon
will her belly go down dramatically after birth ?

thanks ,

I have had lots of Platies and they have had too many fry, but I
hesitate to say much. My experience stretches over 3 years.

I ended my fry problem by separating the males from the females. A
strange thing happened, I put the males in a 10 gallon tank, 5 as I
recall. Four died within 2 weeks. None of the females died in that
period.

All of my females, 3 remaining, are fat, but so are most of my fish.
Live bearing males seem to stay thin, while females look pregnant all
the time.

My platie"s" had babies, both females with in a couple days of eachother, I
have them all in a 5g tank w/ sponge filter. Your platy should be done
having babies by now, once i see my platies or guppies having babies i give
them about 1-3 hours, then who ever is going into another tank goes. Their
belly should have been big and dark, that will go away after having the
babies, she should look normal (at least for a a few days..lol until she is
pregnant again)

thanks nik ,
i appreciate your response , as i mentioned to dick i'm going to put mom in another tank until the fry are too big to eat so i shouldn't have more fry for a long time ...it's really neat to watch them ...they are so tiny ..(amazed i can actually see them as the eyes are failing with age ..lol). i'm used to my big fat cichlids ..

thanks again to all that replied

Not to be barbaric or anything....but I figure what they don't have in 3-4
hours will have to make it on their own in the tank, I usually dip the fry
out shortly after I see her have the babies or vice/versa, and dip her out,
I also look at the belly and can usually tell when she is finished, but if
the fry stay with mom to long they become a snack.

I have so many platys I leave the fry in the tank. About 1/3 of the tank is
a tangle of Jave moss and water wisteria, so many do survive on their own.

I was doing that with my fancy guppies for some time and most grew to
adults, but i had a lot of hornwort in the tank, i lost a good bit of it
when it died off, got to get some more and i will go back to doing that
also. I have more FG babies then i need, i wanted to make sure i ended up
with some platie babies so i removed a good bit of them.
