Without Googling my fingers away...
Just how many "colors" are commonly available, other than the red and blue
strains.
I've seen various greens, yellows, pink...Are they like the Fancy Gupps
where the sky's the limit on color and pattern?

I'm familiar with the split tails, crown tails and (I guess) the regular
'old' betta.

there are many different colors some more often seen then others, then you
have "mutts" that people have bred and you end up with strange colors or
mixes, as I did, but my fry are very pretty none the less and I will be
keeping most of them. I ended up with a purple body and red fins on some,
not a deep purple but dark, if that makes sense.

I have a good page book marked i will post it later when i find it, it has a
lot of different ones they are very pretty.

I don't think anything can match the guppy for color variation and beauty of
pattern and type. If you check out PetsMart when they get their shipments
of bettas in, you may be lucky enought to find some unusual colors. My
original yellow and white bettas come from there but I've seen other colors
that are hard to describe. Mostly I just see the same old red, blue, smutty
greens and combinations of these colors where I live.

I'm curious to the ease of acquiring the male betta imbellis. I've just
got to remember imbellis when I call the LFS.

Ah....very hard to find Betta Imbellis in shops. Some mom and pop
stores will get them every now and then, but usually if you ask them to
order them they can get some.

I remember yrs (like maybe 13 ago) Petsmart in my area had a "female"
Betta shipment.
There were several Imbellis males in the tank. I had to help the kid
because he didn't know the difference between a male and female. Turned
out the Imbellis males were shipped separately and they thought they
were female Splendens.
This is the sad part....he then asks me to teach how to tell the
difference between a male and female livebearer. This kid knew nothing
about fish or any of the species he was selling to folks. Typical
Petsmart!
I understand everyone has to learn. However, do it before you work in a
shop and for goodness sake, Petsmart should be teaching these people
before they start on the floor.
Flash forward to today....the stores are still the same.

I remember back in the 80's, needing some partime and weekend work. A
great LFS in my city (not a chain), was accepting applications. I got the
word and scurried down. The application was only given to those who
passed their exam on the aquaria hobby. It was a general exam, of sorts.
Alot of common questions on care, feeding, medicines, maintenance and
general species knowledge. I scored an 88 on the exam, just 3 points
above the minimum required to request an application.

I got the job. It was a HUGE operation from a vendor's standpoint.
Nothing but wall-to-wall fish, both marine and fresh. I want to say the
building (two story) facilitated around 20,000 sq. feet. I'm trying to be
conservative here.
