View Full Version : Breeding Guppies

I've had guppies recreationally most of my life and have never done anything
special to get them to breed. Just place a male and a female in a tank and
babies come.

I'm wondering if there is any benefit in conditioning the water or feeding
them quality food prior to get better litters and if so, what are the best
steps to follow?

Thank you

Make some time. Guppy people are rather serious...and to think I used
to just use them for food.....
Anyway, you should be able to find some info from expert guppy
breeders using these links. Enjoy and report your successes!!!

I also breed them 'recreationally', but I understand that through
selective breeding and conditioning, you can get very _large_ Guppies who
drop many babies, which are larger and healthier than average. Of
course, the intent is getting particular colors etc and then improving
the lines (color, pattern, shape and consistency).

The path to follow (again, not speaking from personal experience) is to
start with good stock. Then adjust the water conditions to something in
their range (and salt is usually used). Maintain high water quality
through aggressive water changes, and then start developing your own
secret diet (usually with home-made foods). Feeding are done often, with
lots of high protein food, overfiltered tanks, lots of water and cull
mercilessly. There are also some tricks with water temperature and
spices in the food ;~)

Now if you are just doing this for fun at home, then keep the water in
their range (warm, hard and salty), overfilter and feed often with high
quality foods. Those 3 things should get you faster growth, bigger fish
and more numerous spawns. hth
